Digsy
According to BT, my local exchange (for local people) will be ADSL ready on 5th May. I can't tell you how eager I am to sign up so I can post fecking huge pictures in threads just to dial up plebs can't enjoy them Seriously though, if you have seen my lounge you will know that I have quite enough wires behind my PC already. I was looking on DABs for internal PCI ADSL modems. They don't seem very common / popular. Any personal experiences with them? TIA.
JustGav
Don't get an internal modem dude.... They are crap... Your best bet is get an external jobbie.... even better something which does firewalling and just presents you with a cable to plug into the network card on your pc. They aren't too expensive, around the 50 quid mark Gav
Digsy
But why are they crap? What do they do badly? I really don't need a full-blown router (do I?) I run a software firewall on a single PC. No networking involved. I fecking hate external boxes. I thought I'd left all that behind with my ZX Spectrum!
JustGav
Hmmm... I suppose I had better restate my comment.... I'm a little bit of a techno geek, so pretty much everything is wired up in my house, hence the reason I run a router... webcam, digial radio's, tivo, 4 laptops..... that kind of thing... The best question to ask is a) Do you only have one pc, and will you EVER only have the one... if the answer is yes, then go for an internal unit... The reason I suggested a router is becuase if in the future you have a games evening, or you get another machine, you don't need to get rid of the hardware.... also it means less software on your pc, since you don't need the firewall... no dialers to worry about... that sort of thing.. However if you want less boxes, then yes an ADSL internal modem is probably best suited for your application.. As far as brands go, they are pretty much all the same since they are based on the same chipset.. Gav
Digsy
I know you are a techno-geek. I've seen your WiFi enabled car, remember? You use it to download your Chicks Wi' Dicks MP3 collection into your country and western folder Anyway, yes I only have one PC and only ever have had one (unless you count my windows 2003 PDA). So as far as they go, internal ADSL modems are OK for single machines? No specific foibles to worry about? I may run an external one until in the short term (because a mate has a spare one) and then go internal. Cheers, dude.
JustGav
use it to download your Chicks Wi' Dicks MP3 collection into your country and western folder Whooops.....busted *grin* Well... if you have got a PDA... then I would really suggest going for a wireless router...since you can use activesync via the wireless, and even use it control mediaplayer on your pc... world of endless options... Erm.... tell you what dude, I've just realized something.... I've got an Alcatel frog modem at home, which plugs into the USB port, no horrible power packs or anything like that... if you want to use that.. They work very well Gav
Digsy
I probably should have mentioned that my PDA doesn't have a WiFi card in it (I don't even have a Bluetooth dongle for my PC yet!) Something to think about for the future I reckon... If my mate sells his modem (I think that's a Frog as well) then I'll be in touch. Thanks again! carl0s
PCI ADSL cards work well. No problems at all with the Conexant AccessRunner based ones (DABS used to do one, and some Amigo cards were going about thru oem channels). I tend to use routers for customers where possible, but my own Win2k3 box has one of the conexant cards in it, and stays connected to Demon 24/7, auto-reconnects every time etc. I've got a card you can have if that's the route you want to take though.
