Opinions on my hard pipes ;) - newbie

Getting a double skinned heat shied won't be a problem, my mates a metal worker.

So with a heat shied, would "in theory" these 2 filters provide better performance than a standard filter box?

I think they will but others I know will disagree with me, but hey each to there own......your not talking considerable gains maybe 2-3 bhp more and better top end in each gear IMO

But what if my plans were to strap on a pair of hybrids next year, this piping would surely be better set up than the standard to deal with this?

Like I said I feel it would give you better gains IMO if you really want to find out take it on a rolling road and test the difference of both

People all over the globe try to justify these so-called 'performance' filters, quoting dyno results from advertising brochures, claims from magazine 'tests' etc etc...

I've done my own back to back tests (not on supras) and the results were not pretty.

Tell you what: I measured the active surface area of the APEXI before I got it off my supra.

Then I measured the active area of the stock element, before putting it in the stock airbox which I bought used and re-installed.

Any guesses as to which one had the largest surface?

(that's putting aside any air-heating issues of course, these are an extra-bonus!) Both filters were of the paper variety (best filtration) so the comparison is valid.

I eagerly await your bets!

Blimey that's a lot of expense for not much gain...completely independant intakes for each turbo. Nice, but, why? I'm sure it works fine...though I personally would replace the filters with Cotton K&N's or Apex'i ones. I'd also get a nice heat shield fabricated between the engine and the filters.

Not much point, IMO, discussing the stock airbox as you'd have to replace a lot of pipework before being able to.

Ian I agree with Alex's suggestion above, don't think you'll see any performance benefit over stock system though.

:woot: thanks again Nic, didn't know that either, anything else under there worth noting?

I got such a good deal on the car I haven't asked for a full mod list yet.

Things I do know are:

FMIC, aftermarket ecu, boost controller, full am exhaust system, again, don't know the manufacturers of any of these.

thanks everyone for you comments, very helpful. :thanks:

Have you got any more potos Ian, I love playing spot the mod :D

A cheap mod to improve the stock airbox (especially in the summer) is to fit heat-reflective aluminum tape on the sides facing the engine bay.

I'll post pics later, simple yet effective.

The stock airbox has two cool air intakes as most people here will know, and the element surface area is several times larger than aftermarket tat.

I'm not even going into foam-type or mesh filters, drive through a dusty area and your compressor wheels will never be the same again.

For UK models with the Air Mass Meter oil-impregnated filters are a no-no as I'm sure people are aware...

Just to sum up regarding the piping.

With a heat sheald and the Apex'i cotton filters it should be fine.

To do a twin filter system such as this is exessive and expensive for minimal if any gain but seeing as I haven't paid for it, the previous owner did, this doesn't matter to me.

So...

... assuming there is no power loss, if you had the choice to have this setup for free, how many would still stay with the stock box? :innocent:

Only other mods I can name are the Veilside side skirts and rear spats, it also has aftermarket wheels and steering wheel.

You mentioned it has a boost controller fitted, can't see one in engine bay or interior though. You say it's got an afetermarket ECU fitted, most common ones fitted on J cars are Mines or Blitz.

I'd definitely go with stock filter box, as John says you'll probably be able to sell this set up here or on ebay. Thinking about it this would probably be the cheapest option as Apexi filters are v expensive and you woudl need 2 for this set up.

problem is it would only be cheap if i had all the original piping to replace it with, which i don't.

Also the labour of having it all removed?

There must be some spare second hand stock airboxes/piping out there that people have removed to fit pod filter kit, or gone single. Either that or get parts off a scrapper.

It would be very easy to swap over yourself if you want to save on labour cost. I've attached diagram from EPC so you can see all parts.
