Traffic light cameras

A heads up, specifically to people in Dorset (even more specifically to people who live in Poole/Bournemouth.... I have been informed that Holes Bay are not traffic lights you want to go through green over the speed limit...)

Got this email too :

- Dorset Safety Camera Partnership -

Casualty Prevention Through Speed Enforcement at

Traffic Light Junctions

As part of the drive to meet the Government target of a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road collisions by 2010, the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership (DSCP) will be starting to conduct speed enforcement at traffic light junctions from 1st July 2009.

Following Home Office Type Approval for 'Speed on Green' safety cameras, the red light safety cameras which previously only monitored vehicle non-compliance with a red signal at traffic lights, will now also be used to enforce compliance with the speed limit of vehicles crossing junctions on a green signal.

Johnny Stephens, Head of Fixed Penalties at the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership comments: "We have been conducting trials at various traffic light junctions in Dorset, the results have not been used for enforcement purposes but have alerted us to the alarming number of vehicles speeding whilst crossing the junctions. Exceeding the speed limit through a traffic light junction is extremely dangerous and this initiative is designed to ensure that collisions are prevented by ensuring that drivers abide with legal and appropriate speeds."

DSCP is working with the manufacturers of the cameras and the Borough of Poole Council, who are in the process of making necessary changes to the existing red light safety camera junctions. This will involve minor disruption to the roads and drivers will notice that there are now secondary check lines on the road at applicable junctions.

A list of the junctions where Speed on Green safety cameras are in use will be available on the DSCP website from 1st July -www.dorsetsafetycameras.org.uk.

This is not a hoax. Whilst the camera at Holes Bay looks like a perfectly normal traffic light camera (or it did 3 days ago) I'm certainly going to be careful...

Sceptical, could be a hoax for a couple of reasons. Firstly wouldn't they have to paint the white horizontal lines on the road if they are going to use them for speed. Also are the cameras equipped to take the two quick succesion photos to ascertain your speed?

Edit:

It seems they can! http://www.ukspeedcameras.co.uk/guide.htm#Traffic

Traffic Light Cameras

Gatsometer BV, manufacturer of the UK's Red Light Cameras, (named Gatso RLC 36) has been producing RLC's since 1966.

The RLC system is triggered by sensors or ground loops that are cut into road surface as a vehicle passes over them, while a red light is shown.

The Red Light Camera was originally used to measure red light offences. Nowadays the RLC can also be used in combination with speed measurement, similar to that of a Gatso Meter rear facing speed camera (radar type 24 technology) and can therefore also record the speed of the offending motorist as well. So you could end with a speeding offence as well as a traffic light offence, if you go through a red light camera!

Also just thinking about it... Flashes from the camera when the lights are green surely means oncoming traffic will be flashed whilst they are heaing TOWARDS the flash which would be extremely dangerous.

Particularly at a junction....

The cameras are infared, they dont need to flash.

Either way, I know I'm going to be a lot more observant of not straying over the speed limit when going through a green light. There's quite a few traffic light signal cameras in Bournemouth/Poole now.

Ive been checking that website regularly as there is meant to be quite a few junctions being done and at least Dorset publishes where they will be and where their mobile camera will be. Trust Poole to be first place they do it! :(

thanks for the heads up. To be honest if i get to any of these cameras, once i get within a certain distance i generally put my foot down a bit to make sure i get through while they are green. Not so bad in the supra but if your doing 50 odd in a full van and the lights suddenly change when your nearly on top of them, you never want to risk going through but its also not good slamming the brakes on either.

So it's nothing to do with placing cameras on accident hot-spots anymore? The just stick them wherever they have found people regularly breaking the speed limit, decided it's incredibly dangerous, and the only way to save us is to take all our money off us with 'speed enforcement' cameras.

It's all about generating more and more revenue from the motorist to get some money back for hair-brained schemes during the recession!
