Thorin
Potentially thinking of getting a diesel runaround, but needs to have a bit of grunt still I've been looking at MKIV Golf GT TDi's, probably the 130bhp version (unless a 150bhp one came along cheap enough). Anything else I should be looking at?
benkei
My mate has a MKIV Golf TDi (the 115 version) and that has plenty of grunt! He keeps saying he wishes he got the 130 version though. My other mate has a Leon TDi, also plenty of grunt, and I prefer the looks of the Leon over the Golf. Very nice cars too
sams
not sure if they be your cup of tea but the fiat grande punto sporting you can pic them up for around 6000 for a 4 year old low millage job, 1.9mutijet 140bhp and really grunty and quick, i had one but it long story why i not got nomore
adnanshah247
i had a bora 1.9tdi se 130hp rempapped to about 140-150. it was quick, would leave a 2.0litre petrol at the lights. loads of torque.
Thorin
£6k is more than I was looking to spend, £2-3k is more in line with what I was thinking.

Yeh, remaps on diesels are very affective! My mates Golf will easily pull away from my MR2, it's only when my revs start getting high that I begin to catch up. The Leon has just been remapped too, it needed a new clutch fitting cause the old one was too worn to cope with the extra power!
Thorin
Had a look at the 130/150 Leon's, but they seem to be fetching a fair bit more than the same engined Golf.
Wez
Seat Ibiza FR130, mate at work has one and its plenty pokey enough
ManwithSupra
My 2005 ford focus 1.8 TDCI Zetec has got plenty of grunt (i think it’s 115bhp) its not embarassing, good eco as well, 55-60mpg regularly I picked mine up for £5k Thinking about getting a Bluefin for it and bringing it up to the estimated 136bhp and 296nm of torque (Standard 115bhp and 250nm). http://www.mybluefin.co.uk/index.php?option=com_frontpage&task=searchblue&action=AllModels&Itemid=135 Apparently it increases fuel economy as well although not really sure about that. Thorin
Seat Ibiza FR130, mate at work has one and its plenty pokey enough Again they seem to be going for more than the 130 Golf's, but then there's far more Golf's around.
sams
i dont no, what the golf like for re-mapp but jabba sport told my mate when they did his grande punto they could of took it from 140 standard around 205bhp but they put it at 184bhp as then it keeps the mpg, im sure the golf easy can do that
Multics
Good friend of mine has a golf mk4 tdi (the 150bhp one), very nice car, he takes really good care of it and does not trash it around. It has 80k on the clock but has too many problems with it. Alternator gone, noisy injector(s), esp light flashing for no reason, ecu reports glow plug fault while there isn't one... Weird. Except all that, nice car and it pulls really well. The 6speed gearbox is great too for cruising on the motorway where he sees 55mpg+

dangerous brain
I have a rover 220 sdi on a 99 T plate. It cost me a whopping £450 and I'd like to say its disappointing but unfortunately its not. Its actually quite rapid, allegedly faster than the equivalent year 8v golf gti. The image factor is a bit of a downer but if you are abusing it to work and back every day you get used to the image thing. One added bonus is you can leave it anywhere you want, and people cut you up if they want ramming into and your'e not that fussed if you chuck it at a corner and it clips a kerb a bit. JamesC
The Skoda Fabia VRS with a remap to 170-180bhp are supposed to be fairly nippy. Don't look as good as the Golf IMO

Guest willismaximus
I have a lowly Renault Clio DCI with 65bhp but the 100bhp model can be remapped upto around 150 apparently and they're a nice chuckable little chassis and stupidly economical you can seem 60+mpg in them..... course you have to search really hard for a second hand 100bhp model as they're rarer than unicorn turd because a lot of the Renault club guys love them
