Missfire

I just started my car up and it seemed a little bit lumpy, but didnt really think much of it. I just picked a mate up and the idle got worse and then when i drove off it sounded like a mix between a V12 and a generator..... Any ideas? Im guessing something ignition related? I nursed it home and it was driving semi ok

I have had the same thing mate it turned out some of my coil pack connectors was loose, Have you had a service recently ?. Because they may not have put them back on right and sometimes the plastic clips brake so I would check them bud !!

Ive just had a quick look but couldnt see much- i'll have a proper look over the weekend. I had some new plugs put in the other week. Also about half an hour before it started misfiring i had the ignition cover off- so im hoping that ive just knocked something whilst doing that

I have suffered from this for over 2 months finally having a go myself at the repair.

 

First time round it was a disintegrated coil pack connector & failed ignition coil and second time round it was a disintegrated coil pack connect.

 

I have done 2 myself and taking ti to a garage to have the remaining 4 done.

 

Misfires are usually ignition related so coil pack clips and coils are the most likely cause.

Well, i just went and had a fiddle with the connectors but that didnt do anything, so i started disconnecting the coil packs and when i disconnected the one at the front it made no difference to the way it ran, so theres the problem i hope. Now just got to see if its plug or the coil pack!

 

I shall now be able to sleep tonight without pound signs going thru my head constantly! Cheers for the help

As long as that's the problem ye- The only other thing is that i picked a mate up who is rather large and when its low on petrol it doesnt like it, as it makes the car sit on the wonk. So i dont know if maybe the pump sucked up some crap out the bottom of the tank- i know it shouldnt make it to the injector, but who knows!

Well.... I just went out for another look and decided to swap the first two coil packs round to see if the problem moved with the coil pack- it didnt move, the problem just went away! Must have been a dodgy connector, but i checked those last night! Arghh!! Bloody cars

Now im getting annoyed! I got in my car this morning to go to work and the problem was back. So i took the ignition cover off and unplugged the first, then the second coil pack- The problem was still on the first cylinder, even though the coil packs had been swapped round- So what are the possibilities now? Dodgy clip or dodgy injector?

Im not running an FCD so cant be that, also its not just running badly, it's down on one cylinder- because i can disconnect the first coil pack and it runs exactly the same. Ive just ordered a couple of clips from Mr T to try and then if that doesnt solve then i'll be looking at the injector i think

Ive changed the clips and the problem is still there. I have also swapped the coil packs and the spark plugs round, but the problem remains on the front cylinder. Any ideas? I took it for a drive this morning and it was fine and now ive changed the clips it doesnt want to know again

How do you know the problem is on the front cylinder? It sounds very intermittent and since you've changed all the plugs and clips and stuff I would think it's probably coincidence that your swapping of coil packs has removed or replaced the fault giving you the impression it's a particular cylinder missing.

 

I can't help with what to try next though sorry, just saying don't assume you know where and what the fault is cos (like my problem) it turned out to be something really random and obscure that I hadn't thought to check.

Over the past couple of days the missfire has started to rear its head again, but i havent had a complete cylinder go down like last time. So after thinking it was an ECU issue, it appears it isnt, as ive refitted the Blitz Access and it is running the same. It doesnt sound too bad, but theres a distinctive "poofing" from the exhaust.

 

I also thought i would check the fault codes, but i put the wire accross the two terminals, turned the ignition on and there was no light to be seen. So maybe the bulb's blown and that's why i havent seen the engine light come on at any point??
