Wandering front end on my Supra

Have you driven over any pot holes or gone over a speed bump too quickly?

Something may have knocked your tracking out or bent a suspension arm....it doesn't take much to get a bad feeling through the steering wheel.

Failing that then check tyre pressures, check wheel nuts, check shocks and springs.

Or if the steering is clucky or feeling as if it is disconnected from the wheels it could be something to do with your steering column or power steering fluid or servo.

Guys thanks for the suggestions.

Not hit anything in terms of pot holes.

I have whipped both wheels off, got it on axle stands and had a quick inspection. I am starting to suspect a shock issue. I would like it to be as simple as tighting sub frame bolts. The feeling feels very light as I go quicker on dual carriage ways, pretty scray feeling actually.

Trype pressures and wheel nuts are definatley fine.

is the car a recent import at all? I ask as perhaps there's a problem with your speedo converter?, I'm sure I've read people with problems like the in the past with their steering going very light due to a faulty sensor.

I could be well off the mark though :)

Good point. Supras have progressive power steering (PPS) which cuts back the assistance at higher speeds. A faulty speed converter can cause the PPS to provide full assistance at all speeds, leading to very little feedback through the steering wheel and the car generally feeling quite "skippy".

No its been in the UK since around 2002. I would say it feels a bit to wollowee for a PPS issues. At lower speeds on a generous amount of lock it kind of seems to go over itself and feels vague as well. Although very hard to describe, sorry, as wollowee and going over itself seem a little untechnical.

Going to strip it down this evening and then booked into Toyota tomorrow.

I will report back on what the issues seems to be on discovery.

Thanks for such prompt responses.

Wandering/tramlining that appears can come down to:

Tyre pressure imbalance across the car

Suspension alignment incorrect

Shock failure (or stiffness imbalance if they are adjustable)

Suspension bushes worn out

That's sort of in order of likelihood, ease of checking, and cost to fix as well, how convenient :)

Sorry Matt.

Been out of action since mid august witha slipped disc. Just had surgery and on the mend.

The car seemed to just stop doing it having jacked it up several times and inspected everything.

I tightened every subframe bolt as well, as some had suggested after times they can work looser than they should be and every suspension mounting point.

The only over it couold have been that I chnged was my tires were slightly overinflated by a few psi, perhaps causing rounding of the contact surface and feeling a little vague on the road.

What did did you find with yours mate?

Thanks again for everyones comments.

Hi mate did you get to the bottom of this ? As mine seems to be doing the same as yours at the moment!

This started at the same time as I had the centre of the dash apart to change the CD player. Is there anything to do with immobiliser wiring that hooks into this circuit or any other aftermarket device. I'm guessing that a wire has been pulled somewhere in the back of the dash centre. The fault wasn't there when I removed the dash and it was there after I'd replaced it.

mine seems the same, ive only recently bought another, been driving a leon cupra for 18months and they have really heavy steering. picked the supra up sat, drove home, 130 mile drive and i thought on the way hme it felt abit skitish, i think the previous owner had done new front shocks and bushes, has got 18" rims, havint checked tyre pressures yet. seemed to feel a bit like a jelly as i hit some of the ruts or uneven surface, low and hi speed. my mate is going to go right thru the car for me anyhow, so what are the main things to check? maybe its just my imagination, did tell my mate the mech, he said that its prob just you getting used to the supras again, carnt remember my old TT feeling so light as this.
