tbourner
If god came down to you and said for your sins he's going to completely remove one of your 5 senses (or 6, I suppose), which one would you least like to get rid of? And which one would you quite happily be rid of? My ordering is thus: Taste Smell Hearing Sight Touch

tbourner
I'd rather have smell than taste, for safety reasons! And it's a tough choice between sight and touch, but I'd rather keep touch cos otherwise you can't eat (or it'd be very difficult, you'd keep chewing your tongue and swallowing unchewed food and stuff). Matt H
I could live without smell. Nothing worse than walking down the street and getting a wiff of something putrid.

Scott
See this is a bit of a trick. Your sense of smell is the same as your sense of taste, if you lose one you lose the other. I would definitely get rid of smell and keep sight.
Matt H
What about popcorn or fresh baked bread? Smells don't do it for me as much as sight or sound. Imagine t.v with smellavision added... Don't think i would want that!

Its amazing how often you post up "matter of fact" statements that are completely false The tastebuds on your tongue detect sour, sweet, salty etc etc but not the actual flavour of your food. The flavour comes from your sense of smell as you inhale the air onto your mucous membrane. If you hold your nose and eat something you won't taste it. This is the reason why when you have a cold things have no taste. However, if you stick vinegar on your tongue, or salt, you will know it due to your taste buds. It won't taste like vinegar or salt though.

JustGav
See this is a bit of a trick. Your sense of smell is the same as your sense of taste, if you lose one you lose the other. I would definitely get rid of smell and keep sight. Not always...... After a 'minor' car accident a few years back where my nose got caved in, I lost my sense of direct smell and it has only recently returned, it didn't however dull down the taste....but it is very odd not having a sense of smell, I could pick up extremely strong smells but they were always weaker for me. benkei
I'd tell him I'll pay for my sins when I die*, and I intend to keep ALL of my senses during my lifetime as I enjoy/need/want them all *Disclaimer: I do not believe in God, but for the sake of this thread, I am willing to humour you
tbourner
I'm suprised everyone wants sight over touch though - probably because nobody's ever lost their sense of touch completely (hence the need for a god reference), so you don't really know how it'll affect you. Carl_S
After asking "why me" to God, then trying to reason with him, then fight him, I would dare him to remove the one he thought was the most unnecessary when he created Adam. At the end of the day, so long as I can build a substantial and enduring erection in my back garden, and have my favourite pair of eyes admire it, like I am doing today, then I am a happy man. Edit: To answer your question: favourite sense: ESP least favourite: Smell

Your case is a little different. The mucous membrane that detects "smells" was working fine in your case. The path to it via your nostrils was just a bit fooked Your sense of smell is your sense of taste as far as we can describe it. The link provided in the post after mine explains it far better than i even remember reading, hence my crap explanation. One thought that has always troubled me. If your sense of smell is in fact most of your sense of taste (what we conside taste), what does that mean if someone has farted or has just done a havard? For all intents and purposes we are actually tasting particles of the offending whiff.
