If your mate has installed WinXP Pro why are you trying to install another copy of XP over it?

If its a case of changing the Windows Key to the one for you're copy then you dont need to reinstall WinXP for that, there are tools available (google is your friend).

Right. Seeing as you've had a worm on the PC, a good way to get rid is to start completely from scratch. Maybe overkill, but it sure as hell works, and works first time!

Step 1 is to back up any personal files you want to keep (Word documents, photos, emails, internet favorites/bookmarks, etc etc)

Step 2 is to make sure your PC is set to try to boot from the CD-ROM drive when you start it up. This setting is in the BIOS (text-based start-up program that looks like it's from the 1980s). I'll assume you're OK with this. Shout if you're not.

Step 3 is to reboot the PC with the XP installation CD in the drive. When XP asks you where you want to install it, it'll allow you to re-format the partition (probably by deleting the existing partition and then re-creating it.

From there on, it's a standard XP installation procedure. You will need to install absolutely all your applications you need though, and that can be a faff (not hard, just bloomin' time-consuming). Also all the Microsoft updates will need to be downloaded and re-applied, but the XP update manager will guide you through that.

Edit: Just re-read your first post. Does the XP copy that your mate put on not work?

So your mate installed his copy of WinXP Pro and used his mates WinXP 'Home Edition' key?

Or during the install of WinXP Pro on your PC your mate said he was the computer owner?...so in Control Panel > System it shows your mates name as the "registered to" person?

If your mate has installed WinXP Pro on your PC, and you have a WinXP Pro CD and key then you can use a tool to change the key from the one your mate entered to the new one you got with you're XP CD....saves you having to resintall windows.
