Completely depends what you want.

For self defence against all from martial artists to drunken brawlers then I'd say Ninjutsu is the best, there's no style it's all free-fighting, so don't do it if you like going to tournaments cos there aren't any!!

Avoid Kickboxing as it's just watered down Thai Boxing, find someone that does that instead - it's more brutal fighting than most other martial arts.

I've never been a fan of Karate it's too commercialised and there are too many pros training it that aren't actually any good!!! But then I've never actually practiced it so don't take my word for that one.

Kung Fu has always been my favourite, there are loads of different types to. I did it for a couple of years to keep fit more than anything, there's lots of jumping about and flashy kicks that probably wouldn't actually do much harm!! More for point scoring in tournaments, I'm sure some of the forms are more aggressive though.

try Jeet Kune Do, its very fitness oriented and a lot of people (including myself in the past) use it as training for Vale Tudo (cage fighting) competitions.

its a full contact form of kung fu developed by Bruce Lee, he developed it as a martial art that can be used to defend yourself in the real world!

I also did Tae Kwon Do for 6 years and that was good fun it really improves your flexibility as its mainly about kicks, it was good fun and does help your fitness but i found JKD much more enjoyable.

do a real sport, not fecking shite karate!!!!!

go to your local boxing gym, ive been boxing for sometime now and its bar far the best sport ive ever done plus its real blood thirsty non if this, "ooohhhhhhh he hit me stop the fight and give him a point" bull shit"

Your just talking about points fighting. A lot of the martial arts tournaments have continuous fighting which is kind of the same as boxing. (Time limited rounds)

My brother did Tae Kwon Do when he was in Korea for 3 years. They do it for 3 hours every day!!!!

He was the only westerner there at Gu Kiwon when he took his black belt - pretty impressive!! Some of the things they do are a bit mad!!

I've never seen any martial art like Ninjutsu, it's just like street fighting there aren't really any rules!! A lot of the techniques are to the death as well which is pretty scary!! I got hurt several times and I only went for a little while!

As already mentioned, it depends what you wnat to do and what you want it for.

I have boxed in the Army, had unlicenced boxing fights and have had over 30 Full Contact Professional Kickboxing bouts. If you are looking to compete in full contact I would look at either boxing, full contact Kickboxing or Tai Boxing

If you want something that will keep you fit, learn self defence and allows you to gain gradings etc then I would choose either Karate or Kung Fu. If you want something for the street, look at Mixed Martial Arts as they incorporate everything.

The most important thing is to find a club that has a decent set up and an excellent Instructor. There are to many instructors now who get a Black Belt and decide to teach just to make money. They have only been training a few years themself and know very little.

The Club I trained at had Full Contact champions from National to World Class and none them had any sort of grading belt. We were all just equal. My advice is to decide what you want, find a decent club which can be usually be told by the caliber of its members/Instructors, then join and enjoy.

Hope this helps
