KaiBosh
Hi gang, Any ideas about this? I only drive a couple of hours on the weekend, and last week toward the end of my run, the fan came on really loud, drowning out the HKS 5" exhaust. I assumed it had just got hot. Today it made the noise from the off. After driving for a bit there was a second noise a bit like a belt slipping. The fan noise only occurs while revving and disappears completely when I press the clutch. Any advice very gratefully received. Cheers, Kaibosh
Scooter
engine NOT running, open the bonnet and try spinning the fan with your fingers..........does it spin freely?
KaiBosh
Just went to look. Not freely, no. It will move if you push it quite hard but certainly won't spin. Have you seen this before then, Scooter?
Scooter
i think it should spin freely........sounds like a seized/semi seized viscous coupling.........not experienced it myself but have read of others that have i'll try and dig out a couple of old threads for you. Scooter
Loads of threads but nothing covering everthing so i'd recommend you search on............"viscous" If it is only the fan then whilst it Saps power and increases fuel consumption some have run the car like this for months. KaiBosh
Yep, looks like seized coupling as the fan is being driven cold. £50 for a used one, could be a LOT worse Thanks for your help Scooter. Appreciate that, mate K
pistonbroke
But if it was the viscous coupling, surely it would still make the noise even when his clutch is disegaged. He says it stops when he presses the clutch pedal ?
Jake
I can't understand the clutch thing. Definitely sounds like the viscous coupling is knackered though. Easy way to find out if this is the cause of the noise; take it off the car. It's only four nuts. (put the nuts back on after removing the fan and coupling though, they also hold the pulley on) When you replace the seized viscous coupling you'll be surprised at how much better the engine idles. Guest jadedgrace
Hey guys, hope I'm not bothering anyone with the post but.. I Have the exact same problem as the OP, My fan came on randomly the other day and hasnt gone off.. When I start the car the fans constantly on and spinning like crazy.. then when i accelarate it sounds like the fans getting faster and louder.. I've figured out thanks to this thread thats its most likely the viscous coupling that has seized, so I will replace that. But I also have other problems that may be related. Three off my dashlights come on when I'm highway driving and then dont go off unitll I get to a destination turn the car off and dont drive for awhile but come on again when i go for a drive.. They are.. The master warning light in the centre.. The engine/gearbox light (they come on simultaniously) And the Oil with oil underneath light. Does anyone here know what all of these things could be pointing to? I know something definately not right and I want to figure it out ASAP before I do some perminant damage.. thanks a bunch Oh and all my oil levels are fine ive checked all the obvious things which is why this is leaving me scratching me head... Swampy442
Check your error codes, may be a dry joint in the dash assembly, may be something more serious.
