Flymo

I'm in the market for my first lawnmower. I saw today tesco's are doing one for sub £20 pounds. Looks like an upright strimmer and will do the job for my very small garden.

I didn't know they still sold flymo's, but would like one one day.

Please do not buy flymo they are shite!! if you have a decent size lawn, and like it looking good, go for a honda HRG415SD, the cheapest of the self proppelled roller range... or equivilent. personally i use the HRX476QX and find it superb, but thats used everyday on a commercial basis..

at the end of the day you get what you pay for...

given the choice i would buy a 2nd hand honda (or similar) give it a service and new blade and should see you right for years to come if its just for personal use....

The OP does raise a valid point here IMO - back in the 80's the Flymo was a simple beast, motor, blades, fan and a small plastic body to surround it, they got some good air and hovered around with minimal effort.

Since then they have added fancy bodies, double trigger handles, safety switches, height adjustment, cable reels in the lid, collector level indicators, baskets to collect grass, lids to access baskets and so on... they are heavy machines compared with how they used to be.

I suspect going back to basics with a simple one that doesn't collect grass will give you the hover you crave but the other ones are heavy to start with and need to be used like a wheeled mower for best results.

I keep meaning to get a gardener but everyone seems to be a landscape artist these days, I just want a little old chap to come round for £10 a week.

I've got both kinds actually, I never use the small, simple one cos it leaves grass cuttings everywhere. The big grass collecting, cable reeled one is ok, very heavy but its downside is it's so heavy you have to lean it over before you start it else the blade cuts a circular mark in the lawn.
