Help choosing a classic car...

Hi all,

I’ve been thinking of buying a classic car for a long time now, and before I made the jump I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experiences good or bad that might help me in my choice.

My budget is only around 3kish so I know this will limit what I can get, although I’m not scared of doing a bit of work to get a cheaper buy...

I’ve so far being looking at a large selection of cars including –

VW Bay Camper

VW Karmann Ghia

Triumph GT6

VW Beetle

Ford Mustang (non fastback)

1970+ Dodge charger

Datsun 240

Does anyone have any other ideas/guidance?

PRE 73 Chevelle?

PRE 73 Camaro?

I love the American models but so does everyone else and prices are mega high:(

The Dodge Charger would be a later model unfortunatly too, not the 69 f&f stunner but still has a similar look.

I've currently got a 73 Beetle and I would be tempted to stick to VW for the sake of easy parts, but there very common and Im fancing a rarer model which will get people wondering what it is[COOL][/COOL]

My experience of classics is limited, I have owned 2 triumph spitfires. 1- mk4 and 1- 1500.

I love the shape of the spitfire and the drive. For your budget you won't get a gt6 that would be worth buying, good ones fetch 7-8k. Spitfires can be picked up in very nice condition for about 4k.

Yeah, you could get a spitfire and make it tdy for that budget, it's probably the most realist option, I think the other cars would be tatty in that price range.

I have a GT6. Very easy to work on and plenty of spares available.

If you get something older than 1972 then it will be free road tax. But I'm sure you know that.

Don't have any photos do you [COOL][/COOL]

I've heard they are very good cars, but the performance is a let down?

And didn't the mk1 and 2 have poor suspension setups?

I dont have access to the photos at the moment because I'm working away from home.

You wont win any races with one despite the 6 cyl engine. The sound through a SS exhaust is the best bit about them :D

The Mkiii is probably the best suspension set up but is still poor by modern day standards. Also very small by modern day standards.

It all depends what you want.

I'll be selling ours later this year when I have finished fitting all new brake components. Only done 50 miles in the last 2 years. Its a waste really when someone with more time could be enjoying it.

I'm not sure of current prices, but probably not a lot more than your budget.

I bought it 8 years ago just after it had a full chassis off rebuild by its previous owner. The paintwork was poor so I had it resprayed but it still isn't as good as it should be. It will also need the seats recovering as the pvc has split and the foam inner deteriated. (common fault).

I am going to be away from home until the end of July (currently working abroad). Will be able to send you photos then if you are interested.

Yeah sounds ideal, send me a PM when your back.

I'm not worried about the paint, gives me the option to choose a nice new colour:)

Speak to you soon then,

Andy
