Scott Posted June 19, 2009 Share Posted June 19, 2009 Know there are a lot of cat lovers on this forum so i'm hoping that after reading a lot of tragic events this one will turn out for the better. Our cat Taz was a bit poorly yesterday. Started off with him being sick a few times, nothing unusual as he gulps down his food. Came in last night to find him lying down and not up for moving at all. He was very very lethargic so we decided that if he wasn't any better it would be a trip to the vets. Took him into the bedroom with us last night so that we could keep an eye on him and he just got worse and worse. This is a cat who never ever makes a noise, we honestly didn't know whether he had a meow or not, yet he was crying through the night and growling. Neither my Wife, the cat or myself got any sleep at all. Soooo, phoned the vet first thing and got an appointment for 10 bells. Took the little fella down to find that he has some sort of urine infection that is stopping him from doing the toilet. His bladder was swollen and solid like a tennis ball. The vet took him in and got him under anaesthetic to put on a catheter to expel the urine. He woke up and was feeling much better. Now it’s a waiting game till 10 o clock tomorrow to see if the damage to his kidneys is repairable or not. The results from the blood work done today wasn't good, the white cell count suggested kidney failure. It’s a possibility, that due to the infection just starting, that these results can be found, so only time will tell. My Wife is absolutely inconsolable; I’m doing the usual male bravado thing so generally not thinking about it. Fingers crossed What age was your cat when he first had problems bud? Ours is 3 and this is the first sign of anything:search:. Scott Posted June 20, 2009 Author Share Posted June 20, 2009 Well the little guy pulled through. They checked his bloods this morning and the levels are WAY lower than what they were yesterday. One of the readings is still a little high so he has some tablets and special food to eat for a few days, then its back to the vet for more blood tests at the end of next week. Just so glad he is ok, he really is a cracking cat. He is a little out of sorts at the moment due to medication etc but he is in no pain whatsoever and seems to be going to the toilet just fine now. They should have sent some blood away to the lab to check for this and find out what type they are. If so it could well happen again unless you go onto a special diet or start giving him cystease tablets. In extreme cases, amputating his penis can help. I'd be very surprised if there was any lasting kidney damage though. Yup thats exactly what they are doing. Well, its his urine they are sending away, the stuff they had to expel in the first place. Should be able to tell from whats in that what caused it. Its one of those things, if it happens once its quite likely it will happen again. His diet is changed already, as are the other cats. He is the most chicken out of all of them, he honestly doesn't know how big he is. We have a tiny little cat, basically the exact opposite of him, and she rules the roost with him. There were a couple of big dogs at the vet the couple of days we were in. There were a couple of ankle biters that he was actually heavier than, was really funny.
