I.T Question - Bluetooth Security

Probably being a bit anal, but worth asking a quick question.

I have blue tooth on my PC, enabled through a Belkin USB stick. It’s spent most of its purchased life so far sitting on top of the computer, but I’ve recently been using it quite a bit and thought about leaving it in one of the USB slots In the back of the PC permanently.

While I know that you have to input a shared code into your computer and the other device each time you want to transfer date etc; It seems a bit simple.

Is there any security risk with having Bluetooth permanently enabled on your computer, simply using Windows XP’s standard security stuff? Could someone easily “Bluetooth” in?

You are never safe when it comes to Bluetooth.

Even if you hide it, have a password or limit its range.

People can still access it, even if you think its off.

You have to have the right equipment and knowledge to hack in but it can be done.

Bluetooth can also transmit very far and with the right software someone can get your signal bounced off other carrier waves to reach even further.

The only solution to security with it is to unplug it when not in use.

You can always set it to stop broadcasting its ID, that way unless people were looking for it they wouldn't know it's there

Stop it broadcasting its ID, pair it with your devices with a key and combine it with its limited range, you will be safe.

I'll take a look at that tonight, thanks ;)

Tell me about it, i was doing sercurity escort for some MI5 type blokes during op telic and the stuff they had was unbelievable.

Signal jammers that can fit into a 20 deck of fags, bluetooth detectors the size of a sky remote and a laptop was all they needed to hack into potential targets mobiles and computers and gain information.

We know get security briefs before we deploy about how easy it is for someone to hack into computers via bluetooth and how easy it is to turn on webcams via bluetooth.
