F1 : Rival championship??

Also glad to see this happening.

Poison dwarf and 'the spank' are ruining the sport for their own gains and interests.

I am 100% sure that the teams know which is the best way to develop and run the sport in terms of technical regulations and 'direction'.

The thing I'm not too sure about is how much control do the FiA have over the circuits and their use for non-FiA motorsport events?

F1 has always been about pushing the limits of technology and development, and making the cars perform that little bit better. The FiA seem to want to halt this process and turn F1 into another generic controlled series.

I can fully see why Ferrari and the other manufacturers are wanting away from this control.

Be very interesting to see what comes of it all.

While I agree with the teams leaving due to the stifling rules, I do feel sorry for the lesser teams who cant compete, and will end up get relegated to a sort of GP2 championship. Reading teletext this morning, Lola are shelving plans to enter F1 because the FIA said no to entry next season.

They have a lot of control. Didn't the FIA stop A1GP racing at Sao Paulo?

Even if there is a breakaway series, how is anyone going to be able to see it? Will ITV pay to host it? The BBC will have an ongoing contract with FOM to show the FIA F1.

Will Mercedes and Toyota still supply their customer engines and fulfill their contracted obligations with their customers if the engines they use in their series aren't the same as the FIA's?

Will the public want to watch FIA F1 or will they prefer to watch FOTA GP?

Will Ferrari and the Red Bulls be forced to enter into FIA F1 due to their contracted obligations, or have the FIA broken those contracts first?

There are so many permutations of things that will happen, it's all a little bewildering at the moment.

At least if this does happen we should end up at least 2nd in the championship. Might even get 2nd in the drivers too if Willies keep Nak. :D

Im over the moon, this is great news. The big drivers and teams will be in the rival series at some classic tracks again.

Prices may be the same at first but the money will be with the teams in the sport.

Unfortunatly williams and Force India alone wont pull me into F1. However McClaren,Ferrari, Red Bull,Brawn, Reanult, Toyota will, especially with Alonso,Raikkon,Massa,Hamilton,Button, Vettel, Glock....I dont think I need to go on.

Good on them :)

A very complex situation and guess we wont know for quite sometime what the outcome will be.

Tomorrow? :D they've been given until tonight to sign up unconditionally to next season, so tomorrow we'll have a list of teams in 2010 FIA F1.

FOTA said they'll do what the fans want - I want turbos and contoured undertrays to come back! :D

I meant regarding who su's who etc and will FOTA actually be able to sort out a new championship next year.

I dont think its as simple as, okay were off and thanks for all the fish :D

I cant see either side backing down now and feel for poor old Bernie, 1st his wife wanted out and now the F1 boys have kicked him in the wallet too :D

Personally i'd like to see the return of 3 litre engines, active suspension and the like, bring the excitement back thats been missing for so long

3L engines yes.... driver aids no.

Usually its the driver aids that prevent good racing. Because the overtaking zones become less and less as the braking zones become shorter.

If one main thing should be changed I think the 'one move to block' rule should be made more stringent...ie. a driver can move off the racing line to protect the inside for a corner, but should not be allowed to re-take the racing line before the corner apex.

As it stands I think they can move once to block and then re-take the racing line on corner entry... in effect moving to block twice before the corner.

The biggest loser in this could well be Donnington, who've only just signed a 17 year contract for the British F1 GP, presumably this will be sealed up to prevent competing formulas using the circuit as well :(

Could be good news for Silverstone though. and the couple of abandoned tracks in France (Magny Cours, Paul Ricard), Jerez the old European circuit in Spain.

Lots of Good quality F1 standard circuits that Bernie has screwed in the past.

Paul Ricard

Bernie now owns Paul Ricard and has turned it into a 'state of the art' test track. There are several different track configurations, fcilities to wet the track, and it can also be used at night. Quite a few teams do their pre Le Mans testing there.

No racing there though, as there are no facilities for spectators (granstands, toilets etc) though they did run a sportscar race there a couple of years ago behind closed doors.

Could they be brought up to scratch in less than a year though?

Who's idea of "up to scratch" though?

For example, Silverstone is fine as a prospective site - just not in Ecciethumps mind. He can make so much more out of the likes of more modern circuits like Dubai etc...

i dont understand why the 40 mill cap on developemnt costs, there saying honda left cause it was to expensive rubbish if they were winning like braun they would never have left.and its because of F1 developement that we have on normal cars, better gearboxes ,brakes, suspension etc etc.

I think you're looking a little simplistically there Dave. Honda had to close the Swindon plant for 4 month's. It would look pretty bad if they did that, but still spent $400 million on running an F1 team, especially if the team weren't doing particularly well.
