Anyone here into planes?

This is the fastest plane, or man made object for that matter ever made. 2070mph top speed. Stunning machine ... most beautiful man made object ever made in my opinion. And it was made in 1965!!

Here is a very interesting documentary for those interested..

love the way all the panels don't fit when its cold and on the ground and it drips fuel,

had one hit the afterburners over mildenhall after the airshow and we where all going back to the cars, never heard or felt anything like it

Wow! What I'd pay to hear one in the flesh.

And for those of you wondering if its the same plane as the xmen comics and films, yes it is. :D

Some more impressive stats taken from our friend wikipedia.

The SR-71 remained the world's fastest and highest-flying operational manned aircraft throughout its career. From an altitude of 80,000 ft (24 km), it could survey 100,000 square miles (260,000 km2) per hour (72 square kilometers per second) of the Earth's surface. In addition, it was accurate enough to take a picture of a car's license plate from this altitude.[46] On 28 July 1976, an SR-71 broke the world record for its class: an absolute speed record of 1905.81 knots (2,193.17 mph, 3,529.56 km/h), and an "absolute altitude record" of 85,069 feet (25,929 m).[47][48] Several aircraft exceeded this altitude in zoom climbs but not in sustained flight.[49]

Truly stunning statistics.

Saw this first hand at the same show the video was recorded at (summer 1989, was only 13 then!). It was also one of the hottest days in UK history.. oddball fact for you :D

The sound of the thing on afterburners doing the flyby was something I'll never forget. The pilot broke the sound barrier on the fly-by which resulted in a sonic boom. USAF got into a bit of trouble over it, but no one but the locals seemed to care :D

I had that on my Top Trumps in the '70s

Snap - I seem to remember that it had the highest ceiling or something... confused me as a nipper as a ceiling was something you artexed.

Had the music on the video too - Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre - on single. As well as other wordless wonders like ELP (Fanfare for the common man) & Space (Magic Fly) that were also around at that time. Saddo me :sly:

Meanwhile back on thread, 'twas a glorious sound the Blackbird made

Just read somewhere it was replaced by the Aurora. Anyone heard about it? It's classified information apparently but several people have sighted it supposedly.

Rumoured to achieve speeds of 3000-4000mph. That is astounding. I would say speeds like that are just not possible but if the blackbird did 2000mph in 1965, it seems plausible they'd get 3000mph or more in 2009.

Fascinating stuff... well for me anyway :)

Just the thoughts of that is mind boggling

well, like all kids i think we all loved the SR71, but i have a soft spot for the B1 bomber, only cos I've been on one, and seen on fly at an air show - and they're soooo loud its unreal :D

How did you manage to get in one?

Some people have all the luck.;)

Old news, it is a great machine and will live in history as probably the best jet of its time but with some of the new developments in the pipeline it will be surpassed in 3-5 years easily IMO. Aurora is one that has been dubbed as the SR-71 replacement reaching an expected Mach 4, 200,000-ft.-altitude. Although, there are reports of development of a SR-72 plane titled the DarkBird which should be an eye opener.

Might not be as fast but the new gen X-45C looks wicked as an unmanned combat vehicle.

Discovery rocks.
