Stunning machine ... most beautiful man made object ever made in my opinion. And it was made in 1965!! Here is a very interesting documentary for those interested.. It was also one of the hottest days in UK history.. oddball fact for you The sound of the thing on afterburners doing the flyby was something I'll never forget. The pilot broke the sound barrier on the fly-by which resulted in a sonic boom. Had the music on the video too - Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre - on single. As well as other wordless wonders like ELP (Fanfare for the common man) & Space (Magic Fly) that were also around at that time. It's classified information apparently but several people have sighted it supposedly. Rumoured to achieve speeds of 3000-4000mph. That is astounding. Sheefa Posted June 12, 2009 Share Posted June 12, 2009 Old news, it is a great machine and will live in history as probably the best jet of its time but with some of the new developments in the pipeline it will be surpassed in 3-5 years easily IMO. Aurora is one that has been dubbed as the SR-71 replacement reaching an expected Mach 4, 200,000-ft.-altitude. Although, there are reports of development of a SR-72 plane titled the DarkBird which should be an eye opener. Might not be as fast but the new gen X-45C looks wicked as an unmanned combat vehicle.
