Matt H
What do we make of this then? Seems very mixed opinions here. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/31202935/ To me it seems like the copper was very heavy handed from the start and that infuriated the O.A.P who bit back through the lack of respect for her age. As for tasering. Well that's America for you. Huge male cop not being able to simply take control of a 4'11" 72 year old woman so he used a taser! Steviekid
I agree he was being a bit of a dick from the off but he was quite right to do that. If that had been one of us in a supra refusing to do what we were told there wouldn't have been a story. Why should old people be let off?? I saw a bit of road wars the other night and some old dear drove round a major roundabout the wrong way and just got a gentle warning, I'd have been up in court for without due care. Why should old people be let off?? No one is saying she should be let off the speeding fine. THe question is; "was the officer heavy handed" You compare the situation to one of us young boyish lads getting pulled over. I'd hazard a quess that we would pose more of a threat to the officer than a 4'11" 72 year old woman. I agree that she would need to be restrained if trying to get back in her car, but force should be used relatively. Was a taser needed to restrain her?!?! Far far from it. Matt H
Talking when she should have been listening..... So? does she deserve to be tasered for that offence?
AlexM
Sounds like she had no respect for the officer rather than the other way around. She broke the law, he was doing his job.
Gaz6002
Was a taser needed to restrain her?!?! Far far from it. What do you suggest then? A swift slap in the face? She wasn't going to go down without a fight was she? Tazers don't cause lasting injuries, whereas man-handling her or similar is likely to result in a law suit. supra_aero
Did make me chuckle a bit if I am honest as she went down. lol. I know I shouldn't laugh. What do you suggest then? A swift slap in the face? She wasn't going to go down without a fight was she? Tazers don't cause lasting injuries, whereas man-handling her or similar is likely to result in a law suit. That is true. And to be fair to the cop he did give her several chances to step back.

She's not quite the frail old dear that you would expect a 72 year old woman to be and she blatantly lied about the incident on TV. Old people can't moan about being discrimated against for umpteen other things then complain when they don't get special treatment when being arseholes to the police. She had enough warnings. Oh behave yourself! slap to the face I'd suggest grabbing her by the arm (less of force than he has already dealt her) and putting the cuffs on if he is that much of a wimp. Taser manufactorers recommend carrying a defib with the taser. I'd say at 72 years old, you can't get must more "lasting" than death from a heart attack, which could come from mear shock (no pun intended) alone
Matt H
Regardless of the taser, i'd say the whole event could have been avoided if the copper wasn't suck a d!ck in the first place. Just because you have the power doesn't give you the right to treat people like cr&p, especially an old lady. She said she would sign the document, then did you see how that cop got right in her face and ordered her at the top of his voice to move over to the side without first saying, move over politely. Still think Taser would be better than a physical confrontation though. She would be very brittle and he could easily have caused injury by man handling her. Anyway no harm done by the taser which is good

Matt H
Yes, that or a nightstick maybe. Perhaps it would different if it was your mum or gran tasered to the ground, or perhaps beaten with a trunchan.

Dave17
You do seem to forget this is in Texas, where I would imagine pretty much everyone is armed. I think that if I had a pensioner kicking off in a big way that could potentially kill me I'd put a few volts through them as well. I also refer you to the 88 year old that wasted a security guard at the holocaust memorial yesterday. You seem quite heated Matt, is she your granny? Matt H
You seem quite heated Matt, is she your granny? Heated? By Jove no, you've only been here a year, if you think I’m being heated you haven't read some of my previous material! Although I do find it quite a sorry state that members on here don't think this could have been handled in a better way, one that would have resulted in an elderly not being electrocuted.
