Digsy
I mentioned a few months back that I've been learning to ride for the last year or so. Had my first proper show jumping lesson last week. I've popped various horses over small jumps at the end of a flatwork session to add a bit of variety before, but last week was the first lesson completely dedicated to jumping. I can honestly say it’s the most fun I've ever had for £25 OK, so I was jumping a 17hh mare over crossed poles (3' high at the sides but only 1.5' high where I was jumping) so the horse wasn't exactly having to work very hard, plus she was a very experienced jumper so I didn't have to worry about run outs or refusals, so the session was to get me used to the basic technique and feel of riding a horse over jumps. My tutor built the jumps up over the course of the lesson until I was riding three jumps in succession with one canter stride between each. I managed an hour's lesson without falling off or doing myself any damage other then coming down on the pommel hard a few times (the lump bit at the front of the saddle). That brings tears to your eyes, I can tell you I can thoroughly recommend giving it a go. I'll definitely be signing up for more jumping lessons in the near future. I might even pop up some pics when I look suitably impressive (or land on my arse)

Digsy
you dont wear, you know, jodphurs do you? I'm afraid I do. I resisted it for months and months (I used to ride in jogging bottoms) but my tutor convinced me that it would be a real barrier if I didn't take the plunge - she was right. They're not just for ogling girl's bums and making men look ridiculous. As I discovered you just cant be effective in controlling the horse through your legs and seat unless you wear them. Skin tight jeans are an alternative, but I'd rather look like I was off to ride a horse than having a midlife crisis
