Terminator
Does any one know the criteria for defining the colour required for indicators on the front and side of a car. I have found a bulb paint that gives good uniform cover completely transparent but light amber. I have seen a few new cars around with very yellow looking indicators, just wonders what the limit is. I have been trying to get amber 21 capless bulbs for a year and have given up, so paint is the only option. This stuff is the colour of amber head lights for continental driving. Will I get nicked. GavinL
Why not put in a set of the amber side indicator bulbs and see what happens?
Terminator
I did put my painted bulbs in the sides a week ago and so far so good but MOT is a year away. I want to put my clear fronts on. Just seeking seeking advice.
Steve W
I don't believe our MOT testers at our garage have any "Colour Chart" and DEFINITELY no "meter".... I'm pretty certain it's a written paragraph...ie: "All indicators should be Amber (Orange?) in colour" and just left to the testers' opinion..... I know when he brings the Amber bulbs over when they've 'failed' - about 1/3 to 1/2 the paint has dried/cracked off (or worse) ALL amber bulbs (including main agent) that we have EVER tested have been 'painted' . NEVER come across orange 'glass'. I think you should be OK if it's for bulbs (I think we used some a while ago when we couldn't get the small/capless/ambers and it was quite good but needed 2-3 coats but then looked like 'REAL' amber bulbs). sorry - bit vague - FatS. Terminator
Thanks that does help. I know all amber bulbs are dipped but where can one get the Amber paint. The stuff I have is good but it is not like the genuine article even after 4 coats. It is more gold than amber.
matt
Phil I used indicator repair tape on the bulbs ....... passed MOT no probs. Its been on a while , so it doesn't burn off!! I had to buy a roll , so have loads of the stuff...... want me to mail some?
Steve W
I think we got it from 'Partco' (parts distributor - probably one somewhere nearby !) (possibly Motex - same thing) They are the sort of people who supply the high street shops and ALWAYS sell to the general public - even though most of them aren't 'supposed' to (a sales-a-sale I suppose). but I would think they might do it at Hallies or if not, a 'Boy-Racer'ish type accessories shop (we have Kenlees in Romford ! ?) Ours is like a tiny medicine bottle, about 2" tall x about 3/4" wide with built in little brush (and it STINKS ! - probably not the LEAST toxic paint in the world ? !) Fat S. [ps. we now keep the 'large' peanut bulbs in - I think that's the ones you're talking about - but still can't find them in Amber ? they just look exactly like the smaller peanuts, but about 2 1/2 times the size ? they are MAINLY for high level brake lights, as I think I said before ]
Terminator
Cheers Matt, Sounds like I have the yellow version of Steve's paint, it stinks like hell even and hour after painting and kills all living things with in 30 cms of the stuff, I am sure it had a TOXIC thing stuck somewhere, I think I licked the sign off the bottle. Well, put it this way, I never had a problem.
Steve W
Matt, what Phil wanted to know was HOW yellow the bulbs needed to be ...... pale yellow -------- orange-y -------- dark amber You're right of course LOADS of 'em have clear indicators as standard, or as after-market but they all have 'readily'-available orange bulbs. Phil's size bulb doesn't appear to come in amber ? (OR, at least not easy to come by ?) Fat S.
