scoooby slayer
Bear in mind the power to weight ratios. The MKIV is no lightweight. What did the Sierra weigh? A near 500 BHP 2 litre Sierra Cosworth, even built properly, will never be as reliable or as long lived as say a 600 BHP properly built 3 litre, of course, but the big engine's pulling a small HGV along, in comparison to stripped down (2WD) Sierra. Where did 470 BHP come from? It's a huge amount of power from 2 litres, has it been on an engine dyno? I have built a couple of big HP Sierra engines, and to get genuine 450 BHP figures with any reliability at all was VERY costly, and life was measured in low hours. well its done 6k and spot on to date touch wood. head is just polished with bd14 cams. a proper rs500 t4 at 2.2 bar and 7800 rpm limiter. proper big wing sump and 6 paddle clutch. full boost is 5200 to 7800 rpm, had to be caped to 1.7 bar below this to prevent surge. engine was built by an ex employee of nms. setup by msd. power run was on a rolling road but was accurate within 1 bhp with a 150 bhp car that i knew exact bhp of. my engine is now on its absolute limit without a big cash injection to pass the 500 hp mark, and it just isnt worth it. scoooby slayer
And now............. get a supra its a possibility. ive had cosworths for 8 years now, im now on my fifth and have loved it but would like a change at some point. if i do change will be a supra or an r33 skyline thats for sure. MarkR
Good choices. In my completely biased opinion, the supra looks better.
Scott
I raced a 400bhp (dyno proven) in my MR2 (260ish bhp, not proven just going by other peoples cars). He blew me away till about 80 then i pulled him in. I don't know if it was because of the losses of the transmission but i was really underwhelmed with the cossie. If we had enough runway i reckon i would have passed him but we were well well well into silly speeds. It was a friend of a friends car, he wasn't impressed. Don't get me wrong, my favourite car is still the Escort Cosworth It just seemed as if they needed a lot more power to do what lesser powered cars could do with ease. Alex C
Heres an example of a strong BPU Supra ~400 genuine (i.e. not 'cossie')bhp!* Not far away I'd say. Anything 450+ would be quicker than the posted vid. *No offense to you in particular, just been around a lot of '400 brake' Cosworths! I would expect it to pull quite a lot harder. IIRC the 4wd system means almost 25% losses? I dare say yourself and Jamie would know better than me on that one though. Anyway, keep the cossie as it is and get yourself a sup to go along with it. You will be amazed at what you can do with a couple of k in a sup
Scott
is the vid completeley standard engine and turbos with just extra boost ? Its what we call BPU. Engine and turbo's are the same. We just help it breathe more easily Figures of 430bhp aren't unheard of on stock turbo's. Takes a bit of fine tuning to get those figures though. 380-400 is the norm with BPU
Homer
is the vid completeley standard engine and turbos with just extra boost ? Correct. It's "bpu" (click the text). My old one (before going single) was running 428bhp at the flywheel, 360bhp at the rear wheels at 1.15 bar with a completely stock unopened engine at a very conservative dyno (SRR). It made 545bhp at the fly with a bolt on single kit (and still an unopened engine), but then you're talking £6k+ for that. Some make over 600bhp and have perfect reliabilty with just adding boost and required mods, still with stock engines. Jamie's is about 630bhp and the engine still hasn't been touched. James
I'd love to be taken out in a single, most I've seen is BPU and found it quite impressive!

I've only ever been in one once myself but hoping to hitch a ride at Llandow. I am in two minds whether to do it or not because thereafter I may only see my TT as some kind of barge!
