I know this has been done to death but things change quickly in the field of technology so I thought it justified a fresh post. Will be moving soon and setting up new net connection and wondering what peoples experiences are of them all. With Virgin at the mo and not that impressed tbh. A package from sky seems the best bet but what are they like. Anyone any experience with bt or other companies?

Criteria are needs to be fast, unlimitted downloads and have a good wireless. Component to it.

Cheers :-)

As in regards to your criteria........

I am with BT and on the full package, never had any issues and any downtime was for appx 10mins (very rare). However they limit your downloads to 40gb per month and they throttle your speeds something rotten, for that reason I will be leaving them in August and going over to Sky.

The guy I used to buy my movies of uses them and he has never had any issues, there is no download limit and they do not throttle your bandwidth. In the downloading world Sky comes out on top for ISP's in regards to speed and unlimited useage as Sky does not follow any of the fair useage stuff BT has signed up to.

I'm with BT, great download speeds, no limits and no throttling whatsoever. I moved to them from Tiscalli as the line speed dropped to 180kbps for about 2-3months. The moment I switched to BT it rose to 3800kbps, a record for my line (rural) and it stays around that speed. Costs me double tiscali price at around £24/month but worth every penny.

I would try sky if I could, unlimited package not available for me.

o2 for me as well. Moved from bt to them about 4months ago.

My line speed went from 1mb (which was the max bt always told me i could have) up to 4mb, the service is superb and the speed is consistent. I've had no downtime whatsoever, unlike bt who numerous times 'accidentally' cut me off for a few days at a time.

Mine is unlimited downloads (fair use policy) up to 8mb, for £7.34 a month, thats including a wireless router, can't recommend it enough.

I've been with Virgin since they were Blueyonder.... had it installed for 10 years+ and I can count on one hand the amount of times it's gone wrong. Currently on 20mbit cable and it's flawless....

Same here, with Blueyonder and Virgin later on from 5 years and going perfect.

Was on Virgin, but the throttling of the connection if downloading more than 4GB in 8 hours or whatever it was was a right pain, especially as we were on the most expensive service they do!

In a house with a family and also has an office, we ended up hitting these limits fairly frequently and being limted to 4Mbit Megs from 20Mbit!

In the end we found Be (I believe this is the same as O2 now?) and I'm getting 21Mb Download and 1.8Mb upload for half the price of Virgin, without any limits!

Plus have a fixed IP address so I dont have to use DyDNS to get to SSH to my home network from work :D

Ping times are typically in the 10-20ms region for UK game servers where as they were 7-15ms on Cable.

Unlucky mate.... never experienced any of those issues. I download using newsgroups and I've never got below 15mbit and I'm well above the throttling criteria... maybe a problem with your service.

ADSL services seem very hit and miss too, some people run fine for years with no problems, others have no-end of issues. I think any internet service ultimately boils down to distance from the exchange and problem free cabling...

I was with Plusnet for many years (great service, never had a problem)

I then wanted to get Sky and thought I may as well go with there broadband instead as heard good reports.

Had no hassle moving from Plusnet to Sky (back up and running in few days).

Halved the price of my broadband bill (was £25 now £10).

Doubled the speed. (was on 6mb now on 13mb average)

I now have full unlimited (plusnet had a limit at the time)

+ it's easier having 1 bill for the sky and broadband, rather than through differant companies.

So all in all I'm pretty happy with Sky

(apart from having to reset the Sky+ box now and again, grrrr!)

Regards,

Jim
