chris2o2
Had to visit the Dentists yesterday as i was begining to look like a hamster with a mouth full of nuts . My whole right lower jaw is swollen and very tender - Abscess . Not fun . I've been given some Amoxicillin , three a day thing and now i've had three and can feel very little or no change in the pain Anyone remember from past experience's how long it takes until you start to feel a bit better - Im going mad here Thanks

Viv
It usually takes around 24 hours for the medication to take effect. Pain will subside as the swelling subsides. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic and not a pain killer. Ibuprofen is usually advised to take in conjunction with Amoxicillin to relieve pain. Matt H
I think it certainly depends of what you have and how bad. I doubt you can simply say x days blanket for any illness. Took a good 5 days or so when i had a really bad chest infection 2 months ago for anything to happen. I was on 3 tablets day of Amoxicillin and felt like they were doing nothing for the first 5 days. After that i noticed i was getting better then i had finished my course before i was fully well which i was worried about but it went a few days after that.. bizzare, but stick with it. caseys
Had Amoxicillin prescribed after I went about some pain... then I had my root drilled out because it was infected and then filled. I thought I was just going to have a basic filling or something like that! Amoxicillin as stated is the antibiotic, to keep infection from reoccurring. What's been given to you for the pain? I was given coproximol (now withdrawn for some reason..). If the pain's bad go back, or get at least something like co-codamol or something as strong to relieve the pain. Standard penacillin or NSAIDs will not cut it alone. I cannot iterate enough though to finish the course of antibiotics, even if the pain etc has gone away and you've for 4-5 etc days left of them, otherwise you risk the infection coming back and I bet you don't really want that. caseys
Didnt get any pain killers Just popped one of my mums co-codamol though seems to be working . Make sure the co-codamol isn't off. EDIT: Taken out about reading them up - thought you meant co-proximol. Make sure not to take any on an empty stomach, nor drink any alcohol, nor mix pain medications in short periods would be my advice (I get all this from my parents - they're both doctors) Quite shocked that you've not been given any painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs... unless you're asthmatic at all? If so anti-inflammatory drugs to take the swelling down are hard to come by as many can trigger attacks (I suffer this )

To be fair it wasnt all that painfull until i started taking the amoxicillin , seemed to start fighting the abscess and then the pain began . Thanks for the advice though mate
Whitesupraboy2
I had abcess once and it burst...most fowl taste ever!! then of course it would naturally ooze all time but very painful Same drug prescribed sorted problem.

I was given coproximol (now withdrawn for some reason..). I think Co-proxamol was withdrawn due to the effects it caused when taken in over dose. It has something to do with the drug action of one of its ingredients (Dextropropoxyphene) which can cause irregular heart rhythms and respiratory depression when taken in excess. Paracetamol alone is generally just as effective.

I'll back you up on that! It only needs a single bacterium to survive and the whole thing will flare up again... so you MUST finish the course
caseys
Found out why co-proximol was banned! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8107546.stm The controversial withdrawal of a common painkiller has dramatically cut suicides, say researchers. According to the shock headline courtesy of the BBC
Steviekid
Found out why co-proximol was banned! The trouble with co-proximol was that it was very easy to accidentally overdose. If the maximum daily dosage was say eight tablets (2 QID) then simply taking 9 was enough in some people to cause overdose side effects. Most drugs (including all the ones like co-codamol etc) have much bigger margins of error.
Axle
You may not be a very good responder to Amoxicillin. Or you may just be a slow responder, either way give it a few days atleast before you expect any change.
