Engine Dead help?

Hi,

 

My twin turbo Supra suddenly cut out yesterday and wont start.

 

There is fuel getting to it as sparks are wet and all spark well, there are no error codes present when running diagnostics and all the fuses are ok. Engine almost tries to start but then doesnt catch. I have left it with a garage who say that maybe the cam belt has skipped a tooth on the crank which has knocked the timing out but if this isnt it I am going to be paying them labour by the hour for them to figure it out anyone got any other ideas?

 

The first turbo span up ok when i was driving it then the second was just coming in then instant dead engine. Its pretty much standard apart from exhaust and FMC. Thanks to any replies. Am now a cyclist!! :(

Its possibly flooded. Get a set of jump leads and hook your car up to a running car. Take out the EFI fuses and crank the engine over with your foot on the throttle for 5-10 seconds (no more, you don't want to burn out your starter). Put the EFI fuses back in and then try to fire the car up.

 

My car flooded a month or so ago, i was tearing my hair out trying to find out what the cause was. My car wouldn't even hint at starting until i took out the EFI's. I killed my battery trying to get it started hence why i say you should do it with jump leads.

hmm yeah thanks scot il try that 2mora then on way past garage. Any others ideas? Did yours flood whilst driving then?

 

My car was in the bodyshop for a blow over so they were starting it and stopping it daily without it really going anywhere. One day it just wouldn't start as it had flooded BADLY.

 

Its worth a shot. Another thing to try is taking an old spark plug, if you have one, remove one of the coilpacks (still connected to lead) and with the EFI fuses removed get someone to turn the engine over while you hold the spark plug against the block. If you get a spark jumping across then you have fuel and you have spark. Only thing it can be is flooded, if you don't get a spark then its most likely either the ignitor pack or possibly an immobiliser.

i had that happen to me took spark plugs out they all gave a spark, lucky i have a friend works in toyota garage he said looks like your not given a strong spark , he tested the coil pack and found that it was breaking down .Got new coil pack now car purrrrrs now

Ok its not any of that then!! Could the ECU be faulty and stop the car from starting and running altogether? The ECU does work when testing to see if it provides error codes when prompted too (ie forcing a temperature guage fault etc.) Anyone??

If you are getting fuel (wet plugs) then its pretty much ok to say that there is engine speed being picked up, whether it is correct signal is another matter so could be crank sensor.

 

However my betting would be on the spark side, check your coil pack connectors and you could try whipping one coil pack out, putting the spark plugs in the coil pack and shortiing the plug on the camcover while cranking to look for a spark.....

 

EDIT: Has the MAP sensor pipe blown off......mine did this while mapping and caused all sorts of panic (luckily i stayed silent and just had a quick look, Ryan was amused lol)

Told him to do that and he replied saying he has tried it so i'm at a complete loss.

 

If he is getting fuel, air and spark then he should get some sort of shudder regardless of whether the crank sensor is off, should he not?

i had all that wet plugs air and spark BUTengine was turning but not firing it went all back to coil pack you need to get it tested properly mine spark plugs looked ok gave spark, but they wasnt given a strong spark to ignite the mixture made me scratch my head and curse the car started to think same things like ecu timing BUT in the end it was coil pack GET IT TESTED

any sort of spark will create some sort of combustion, and id have thought if there was no crank sensor signal there would be no injection whatsoever....

 

Which points to mechanical timing issues imho

 

not if they in the engine you wouldnt see that when under load no spark but you take them out rest them on your engine spark every time thats wot happen to me thats wot confuse many people see spark and think well coil ok, but its not

He would be very unlucky to get all 3 coils die at the same time dude! Supras will run on 4 cylinders if a coil fails

Or even 5 cylinders :) While there are three coil carriers, there are still six individual coils, and those are what you get when you order new ones. Says the voice of experience :blush:

Just to add, the sup runs on 4 cylinders (very rough) as long as its not any combined cylinders.... ie 1&2 etc.

 

Thats what i found anyway when i was having hassle.

Really?! So you have to struggle like fook to get those philips screws out:blink: that sounds like epic fail:(

 

 

as long as its not any combined cylinders.... ie 1&2

 

I have had cylinder 1 and 2 down together and run and revved, just sounded a little sick

When my cylinder 1 clip was fooked it sounded a little sick, as soon as i took off the 2nd clip it shuddered to a halt. If i took off any of the other ones it just ran rougher lol.

 

Strange.

 

Yeah those screws are a pain to take off. I had to use a hacksaw to cut a slot into mine so that i could get them off.

Ok problem solved and not nice n easy!... Basically the Crank Star has detached and destroyed the crank sensor but to add insult to injury have also discovered crack on crank pulley so new one of those as well! Thanks for all the suggestions people.

Ouch thats a painful one. There was a welded crank star for sale a few days ago too.

 

Make sure if you get a new one you get it welded :)
