how_supra
Does anyone else have a complete and utter phobia of something Mine is spiders, wasps and bees. I even know it's completely irrational, but even if I hear a buzz or see a spider anywhere close to me, then on comes my frantic mode and my heart beats faster and faster, and my arms flap around in an uncontrollable manner The other day I was driving to Slough with Terribleturner in my passenger seat, I pulled my sunvisor down, and there would you believe was a spider about 4ft wide with legs longer than a giraffe. (Okay it was a good two inches) Of course I'm driving, my arms start flapping, the only word I can say is "spider spider spider spider" over and over and really fast. (I'm just glad it didn't drop on my lap). During that time I somehow managed to slow down, indicate, pull over, apply my hazards, wait for cars to overtake me, before I jumped out the car, and got terribleturner to rid the vehicle of the evil giant monster in habiting it. Hello I am a grown adult, I'm just wondering if anyone else has demonstrated such stupidity over something so small? Or has a similar phobia which they know is completely irrational
Digsy
I don't think I have a phobia over anything really irrational. I wasn't keen on earthworms when I was younger for some reason. There are one or two things that make me break out into a cold sweat if I even so much as think about them. One is the idea of being buried or trapped somewhere extremely small while still alive and the other is (morbidly) what it will be like to die (since I can't avoid it). Oh - and I have a "thing" about shipwrecks. Not sure why but although I am fascinated by them I don't think I could swim around one or even over one if I knew it was there. I get a sort of tingly feeling if I'm even watching a documentary on TV. Odd eh? But then again, that's exactly what a phobia is. An irrational fear. Ian C
I have one but I'm not saying what it is because people could use it against me It's also so rare there is no X-o-phobia word for it. What pisses me off is when people say "How can you be afraid of that?!" I don't know! It's a phobia! Irrational fear! Look up irrational and then f*** off! -Ian

how_supra
i used to be terrified of heights but i worked myself over it, i went and did a load of climbing and abseiling and now i love the buzz of being up high. I used to be fine with heights when I was younger. Could do all of the tree climbing malarky and walk near edges etc etc, but now, now I have ridiculously long arms and legs which I have not control over........or at least that's my excuse. (Although I do enjoy indoor climbing ). But the thought of going near any edge really makes me nervous Although I would happily take my chances with an edge or a wobbly bridge if I was being chased by giant man eating spiders or a bumble bee

Jake
I have a phobia type thing about scratchy noises. The sound a butter knife makes against that grease-proof paper that butter used to come in makes me feel sick. Somebody runnings their nails down a blackboard doesn't bother me at all though. My mum has a thing about blood but only if it's mine or my sisters. If mum cuts herself she's fine, if anyone else cuts themselve she's fine, but if I cut myself she goes into a complete panic. How weird is that? I'm 39 years old for FFS!

merckx
Don't like big spiders with long legs that you sometimes find in the house, they're bl**dy quick. Normal size ones are okay, I'll just pick them up to put them out. Even worse when you find one in the bedroom and go to get something to take it outside, come back and cant find it - Sh*t! :eek2:

Even worse when you find one in the bedroom and go to get something to take it outside, come back and cant find it - Sh*t! :eek2: Yeah I get really big spiders where I live as well. Not just imagination big but bloody huge things, that move really quickly. When I moved into my house, I spent the whole weekend lugging around furniture, got everything where I needed it, woke up the following morning and saw a big spider run under my bed. Of course this meant I then had to move all of my stuff from under my bed, move all of my furniture out of my room, get a housemate to get rid of the spider and then I spent the next half an hour hovering up. Ooo and one other time, I had to knock on my neighbours door to remove a spider from my room as there was no one else in my house and I couldn't go in my room until it was gone. I'm the first to admit that I'm really pathetic

Tannhauser
As I'm in a sharing mood: In 1920, Watson and Raynor demonstrated how easy it was to induce a phobia. In a totally unethical procedure, they created a phobia for 'Albert', a 20 month old child. First they gave Albert a tame white rat to play with. He was unafraid and cooed with pleasure. Next, each time he was given the rat to play with, they banged two enormous metal bars together behind his head. He was afraid and tearful because of the noise. Before long, no surprises: just the rat itself was sufficient to produce a fear response. As a kind of side effect, Albert also became terrified of other white animals and cotton wool. I've read two contradictory accounts of what happened to the child afterwards. One is that he was 'deconditioned' by Watson and lost his phobia. The other is that his parents withdrew him from their tender clutches before they could attempt to remove the phobia.
