Stock IC Swap

Recommended Posts

my stock IC is trashed, most of the fins are gone or so small they are useless, thanks to scooter i have now got a very good quality 2nd hand unit.

now im on a bit of an economy drive at the moment and was thinking about swapping them myself, i have a fair bit of experience working on cars having owned a beetle (i spent half my life groveling around in that thing fixing random bits and pieces).

how easy will the job be? can i get at everything if i take the headlight and airbox out or is it a bumper off job? any help or advice will be most appreciated

A friend of mine got his stock IC out by removing the plastic wheel arch liner un bolting and pulling into the wheel area..........if that makes sense.

No bumber off or anything, a couple of hours if I remember correctly.

cheers

markb

i second that

You NEED to take the bumper off, trying it without will be harder, slower and more likely to bugger up the replacemnt trying to wangle it back in, and get access to the fasteners. I am having another 4 new, stock mount, uprated I/c's built, after those are sold it's unlikely I will be doing more, as people are getting less willing to spend money as these cars get older. If anyone wants one rserving I will take deposits.

I would have though it would be the opposite, you have an engine capable of 300,000 and faster than most cars. Without a good IC the engine is doomed. £500 ish gets you cooling better than stock and no insurance issues. AFAIK most replacement SMIC's "not Toyota ones" are good for 500 - 550 BHP charge cooling. IMHO a new IC is a sound investment.

Or are we getting a new breed of MKIV owners who don’t appreciate it costs real money to keep these things going, ITRO £3000 just to tax service and run it, say 12000 miles a year. If you mod it you can easily add a couple of £1000 a year. When insurance is added it can easily be a £6000 -7000K a year package for under 30’s. You can run a lot of clogs for that.

With the increasing number of really shabby examples out there I think many MKIV’s are being badly neglected. Probably not the case for the majority of owners on here, but the bad ones are out there.

So way off topic, rant over.:woot:

Sound advice on the method, however it can be done with the bumper on and keep you hands and IC in good condition.

while I agree with Chris and Terminator (obviously) a quick look at the 'parkers' guide may act as a wakeup call for some.

Yes, I know that market prices for Supras hover well above Parker's estimates, but that's because of the F&F effect, which was quite dramatic IMO. Up until then the Parker's guide wasn't very far off as I recall.

And even now, I do know of Supras changing hands for way less than their owners would like to admit. They are exceptionally well made muscle cars, but they are not (yet!) collectable classics like Ferrari GTOs, so second-hand prices will continue to fall for a while.

(If there was a group buy on CW SMICs I'd be interested by the way)
