Sunday trading laws

Why do we have this fecking stupid law? its 4:30 and i cant get anything because all the sodding shops are closed.

America doesnt have a problem with opening on sunday (and later at night) In the US i can get dohnuts 24/7 if i want, go shopping for food any time of the day i want. Most stores are open till 9 or 10 every day at least. In the uk even 24 hour tesco isnt 24 hours!

Its pathetic and pointless and something that realy annoys me and frustrates the hell out of my fiance (who is american).

:bang:

That was the first link on google but even the nearest one to me is open till 22:00 on a sunday, what im saying is it cant be "law" or how would Tescos get around it?

I think it might have something to do with the size of the store that means some can remain open for longer on a sunday as the big superstore i work at has to close at 4.30 on a sunday but a small Tesco express 2 miles away stays open until the evening on a sunday; but it definatley is due to the 'Sunday Trading Law'.

im just saying i wanted to buy one thing. not do a whole days shopping.

In todays climate im sure there would be plenty of people willing to work sundays for some money.

I just dont see the reasoning behind the law thats all.

The tesco extra in northampton even closes on saturday.

By plenty of people I'm guessing you mean those poor sods who work in retail for crap wages with nowt to look forward to bar long hours and grief from customers.

You come across as really patronising by implying that they should be grateful for some extra work. Most of the rest of us get some time off so why shouldn't they?

No major shops should be open on a Sunday.

This habitual weekend shopping is crazy. When we were kids we'd go for days out as a family, see things, maybe do something (shock) educational.

It makes my heart heavy when I pass queues of cars fighting to get into the commercial parks on a Sunday.

This has also helped to kill local towns and independent shops too. Support your local economy, I'm sure you'll find a local convenience store open if you're really desperate.

What do you need to buy that's so desperate anyway? Maybe a neighbour could lend it you?

Excellent post.

I find it especially despairing on Boxing Day when you see them queue not just to get into the retail parks but queuing to get into mcdonalds and kfc drive-thrus.

Most people work during the week, then when they get home they eat. by the time they are done the shops are closed :p

What i wanted to buy was a small bit for my pc most people wouldnt own. Tesco wouldnt sell it, my neighbours wouldnt have one. I was limited to PC world/currys/dixons (long shots) and maplins. All were closed bar maplins who surprisingly didnt sell it. Its not the kind of thing small local family run shops would sell and i wouldnt know where to go if there was one.

I live in Northampton. Its a big town. But nowhere near a city. Its not like sheffield where i used to live where i could have gone to numerous shops. Although again i doubt small local family run ones would be open on Sunday. But then i dont have a problem with that, its family run.

Im jobless, I would hapily work on sunday in a shop (if there was any jobs). But i dont have the skills. A few years ago i went for an interview with PC world in Barnsley, my first real job after uni, and got turned down because i didnt know how to work a till despite knowing PC's inside and out and just coming off an internet computing degree.

And secondly im not saying people working in shops should give up there time off. My father in law to be works tuesday-saturday and has sunday and monday off. He still gets his 2 days off. and if that were me id rather have monday off than saturday!

Exactly. Why the need to consume every second of the day. Today's 'now' society had driven a wedge in family life and social structure and created giant shops which force people to work every hour of the day at minimum wages. If it was not for the law some shops would open 24/7 and shop workers would be on horrendous contracts of work.

Just think of Bank Hols etc. Many shop workers HAVE to go in on Bank Hols and that really messes up their holidays and family time.

We need these compulsory breaks to protect some people and their families.

It will not kill you to wait until Monday anyway. What is SO important?
