BHG? Opinions please...

Greetings & beatings, ladies & gents!

Right, in a nutshell:

  • Stock '93 N/A (no sniggering at the back) with 245000 km under its belt (see earlier comment re. sniggering). My bulletproof daily driver for 11 years now. (off the road since this problem started)
  • Since Sunday, coolant level is down every time I check before a cold start, but the expansion tank level is between high and low. (replaced rad cap & still the same)
  • Temp gauge has never been above 50%
  • Oil level warning light (orange?) flashed briefly last week on a fast bend, oil was towards the low mark so I threw in a liter of fresh stuff.
  • Metallic rattle/clank on cold startup for first couple of turns, then misfire for a few seconds and then runs ok.
  • Bottom coolant pipe into thermostat stays cold when engine warms up. (so thermostat is gone...)
  • Steady white cloud from exhaust when warmed up, but only when revved. Plenty of moisture all the time.
  • Plugs 1-5 ok.
  • Plug 6 has very light brownish colour on ceramic surround, otherwise ok. Top of piston looks 'moist'... :(
  • Small blob of grey goo on oil filler cap (nothing approaching what was on the last car I saw with a BHG).

So, is it even worth ordering a new thermostat? If it's defo a BHG (or some other internal gubbins) the car's going to the scrap yard as, at this stage, its value isn't much more than the cost of the repair, which I can't afford anyways. (Unless anyone wants it for parts)

TIA!

Yah, I'd never heard of one either until recently, but read that they've started creeping in on some the more 'mature' cars, like mine... :senile:
