Engine Oil Light Russion Roulette Game

Recommended Posts

Driving the misses racing Astra into work today, started her up outside my house, oil light came on nice and bright, it came on yesterday but was quite dim and then went out but today was bright as a button, to early for anywhere to be open to proceeded on my 70 mile journey into work.....

Just kept looking at it on the motorway thinking dont run out and sieze up, but she made it......:D

Cant imagine how little oil must be in there if there was no light yesterday and today was full on, gotta be loosing it fairly quickly......

Who reckons it would make it home lol........:innocent:

So whats the furthest anyone else has driven with the red light constantly on, anyone ever seized an egine like this......

I've seized 3 bike engines like that. Only thing with a bike, when the light comes on, you've got maybe 30 seconds before everything grinds to a halt. I always wondered why they bothered putting the light there.

In the early 90s had a Volvo that had been treated with slick 50 from near enough new what a smooth engine right upto 100,000 something odd miles.Great stuff ,must admit thought about putting it in the Supra but wouldn't notice smoothness with the big bore exhaust vibes!!

Just a little warning, DO NOT PUT SLICK 50 IN YOUR SUPRA!

do a little reading on these types of additive, or ask CW and see what he thinks;)

Sorry, you are right, some people might know that I was joking, so good point :)

Chill guys lol :D Its only the misses 1.6 entry level S plate Astra with scratches all over the body..........

Would have checked but I needed to head off to work and the car was already started, weren't willing to turn the engine off, wait 10mins to get a good reading making me late so decided to play the russion roullette game lol......it made the drive in more interesting....

All good though, I just checked it, plenty of oil, dunno what you lot are worrying about lol........light is still on though, faulty sensor maybe.....?

Because the other posters on here have realised that the light means low oil pressure, not level.

Hmmmm, I did wonder that, but its the stupid symbol, it shows an oil can with a drip out of it, to me, that says level lol.......

So what common issues would cause low oil pressure ?

Well Im guessing it aint oil pump, it survived 80mph on the way back, a few others with Vauxhalls are reporting the same, oil light coming on and off, seems it might be wiring or sensor, dunno ?

But she runs fine......

Well it could be the sensor, but low oil pressure is one of those signals that means "stop the car now" not keep going and see what happens. The very fact that you havn't blown it up suggests that by luck you don't actually have low oil pressure. Usually by the time the lamp comes on its already too late.

Story of my life lol, wing it and more luck then judgement, gotta rely on a good bit of luck in life, otherwise you dont walk away from things like this with very little damage ;)
