Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Alright guys,

Just wondering, does anyone else on here do Mixed martial Arts (MMA). I started last week and im going again tonight. I found it really good! I didn't know what to expect actually when I first turned up, as I dont know if any of you have watch the UFC or Cage Rage, if you have, well that's MMA.

Knowing that its a full contact sport, I was a bit nervous, especially when I turned up and there were blokes there 7ft and looked hard as nails! (7ft I kid you not!) Even the small guys looked scary :giveup::faint: lol.

So from that minute I was thinking, hmmm bad idea this, im going to get a kicking haha.

But as the class got going I have to say it was really really good fun! Everyone was friendly and I learnt lots. It was really hard going on your fitness though. It started with an intense circuit training to get warmed up, then we partnered off to get straight into everything.

I was quite relieved that the training wasn't done "full contact", however, there are competitions and sparring sessions which are held, which are, but for now I think ill avoid them and concentrate on getting fit! :)

Overall though, if you ever fancied doing something in the form of martial arts, but was unsure what to go for, I would definitely recommend MMA. You will improve your fitness massively, and you cover a whole range of things like Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Cardio, Circuits, Kettlebell training - Basically everything!

I used to do Taekwondo for many years and got my Black belt but haven't trained in a while (12yrs), but I have to say, overall this gets your heart rate going much quicker. Taekwondo was good, but there was all the "katas" to learn and, not that I minded, but you had to wear a suit as well. In MMA you train in shorts and t-shirt. Id say its more relaxed in that respect, however, its run very professionally and there is no messing around, laughing etc. You just train hard!

Anyway, just fancied writing this to see if there is anyone else on here that does this sport. So is there!?

Cheers for reading! :)

My girlfriend has started doing MMA, Ive been sparring with her the past couple of nights, I dont like the way she fights (Im more of a muay thai kickboxer style) I dont like the style of kicks or even some of the punches. It could be the place she is going (northwest warriors in bolton) She seems to be doing alright but I let her go sick on my legs and arms and she hurt herself and I was fine. I used to get tought to take pain not just how to fight. Which place do you goto?

P.S. very rushed post incase of mistakes.

MMA, Always wanted to get into that, used to kickbox for years. Got hurt got fat gave up. Maybe time to get back into something me thinks.

Thing that puts people off is UFC they see no pads knock outs and worry that the club they go to will kick the living poo out of them i guess it works the same way IE you dont have to spar if you dont want to? I for one can do without the mountain of injurys i used to get.

I did Kyokushin for 3-4 years and then some Muay Thai. Both very good for fitness and overall hardness but very difficult to maintain the discipline, a wife and a job. Currently "reviewing" carrying on or quitting.....

Sounds good mate, its nice getting back into it i bet

I have done martial arts since i was a kid but the one i stuck at and still love is Tae kwon-do, been training about 12 years now, im 3rd dan now working for my 4th. I used to teach it professionally but i got offerd another job i could not turn down and now only teach one club and still train. My other friends do kick boxing etc which i train with them which is a nice change, never done MMA though Sounds good!

The only thing i disagree on though when you said that MMA gets your hart rate going much faster..It all depends on the Instructor teaching the class. My first taekwondo class done so so so much fittness and not much line work so it was good keeping you fit but learning how to sparr and line work etc was not that great..My instructor now who i have been with for 12 years covers everything and really pushes with sparring which i love so im very lucky to have a good instructor...

Glade your getting back into it and it sounds like a nice club, you just stick with it now :)

 not really something to be proud of mate, especially if your just training! Hence why you got a ban!

Yep im LOVING getting back training again! Went last night and became a member. Last week was pretty much all ground work, grappling and take down. This week was alot of stand up - boxing and kicking etc.

I wasnt knocking anyone who does other sport when i said this MMA gets your heart rate going. Your correct about the whole instuctor thing, it really does depend. I went through about 3 instuctors over the years and one of them used to concentrate all night doing patterns, and spent like 10 mins sparring. Where as my last instuctor, he coached the British Taekwondo team, and was generally good all round! But he focused a lot more on sparring, and even held a seperate class which was just sparring only, which a few of the British squad team came and trained. You learnt a lot and it was really really good!

I wouldnt say I prefer it any more, its just different, and quite a lot more variety!

Couldnt of said it better myself.

I used to do kickboxing, got upto 1st dan, and became an instructor. I had to give it up when I went to university though. I do miss it, especially the sparring. I was thinking about taking up martial arts again, but not sure if I'd do something different next time. I've just started a gym membership, so that's where my money and effort is going at the moment. I'd need to get back into shape before I started again I think! MMA sounds interesting though, but full contanct is a scary prospect!

What is full contact like, boh for just beginning, and after you've been doing it fo a while?

I've been doing kickboxing on and off for years now. I think I'm genuinely too timid to be a good fighter though, and my reaction times are awful. Apart from that, I'm not bad... ;)

always wanted to do MMA as well.

This autumn I am going to Thailand for Muay Thai and MMA. Going to stay there for at least six months to get in shape...

Sounds serious. Can't help thinking of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill when she goes off to train with that master in the middle of nowhere.
