txt spk

I don't like txt spk as a rule and I think the majority of people on this board would agree. True it does creep into a few things I write, I think I get away with a bit here and there, but thankfully 99.9% of what I write is in proper English. I saw this article and, I am ashamed to say, I agree with the Daily Mail here. Now that's a first.

What I don't understand is, with most mobile phones having predictive text, what is the point? Surely it's easier to write a word properly, even if it's misspelt, than to use brain energy into twisting simple words into bizzare combinations of characters and numbers?

Answers in English please.

the point is getting the most message in 160 characters, txt spk was invented to fit messages into phones that could only do 1 text message at a time, now it doesnt matter so much as phones can send multi text messages, but back in the day you were restricted to 160 characters

the thing is this "language" has evolved and kids in schools now use it fluently to communicate, to a really worrying degree, personally im dyslexic and hate it, but i cant spell anyway ;) but i dont thing we are going to see the end to this new form of communication anytime soon !

In response to this thread I'd like to use a massive amount of swear words. Unfortunately they're censored, yet m8 isn't.

I'm not sure the public at large realise what this is doing to our language... we're turning into a list of abbreviations!

HTH.

...On a serious note, I won't take anyone who uses txt speak to communicate with me seriously. Use it and expect a stupid answer.

Is anyone really able to read that ad fluently like they would with normal English. That is the question, it seems like people can read their own abbreviated txt spk easily enough, but it's a job deciphering someone else's.

I hate text speak.... I can see why it came about though, just never bought into it myself though when I had a 160 word phone and just sent 2 messages if I needed to, or shock horror, just phoned the other person :)

Think it's pretty sad though that they feel they need to write an advert in 'txt spk' to get through to children. Does this mean all the lessons that children have aren't going to sink in because they are taught in standard English instead of text speak?
