power steering pump...i think!

Just a quick question to anyone who has had this problem before.

 

Is this roughly the noise that a knackered power steering pump makes?

(Found this clip from a previous thread, but no one had confirmed it was the PS pump)

 

Will it be ok to drive to a local garage and assuming it is, how much am i looking at to get it repaired?

It makes a bad noise if it has air in the system also, worth doing a full bleed to rule that out first

Take the belt off and check for play in the pulley side, if it wobbles about everywhere then the bearings gone.

Its relatively easy to strip the pump and replace the bearing if you can get access to a bearing press and it will only cost about £10 or less to get a new bearing.

Start the car, take the cap off PS res. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 10-12 times then top up with fluid if needed.

 

I have a leak in my PS system and need to do this weekly. To replace the pump will cost about £300 if not more as they are expensive new, but you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for about £70

Over the last two years I am noticing the amount of cars with PAS pump problems.

Simple answer change the fluid or you will end up changing the pump, 15 yr old fluid in a system that breathes into open air will die faster than you think.

Well, i've bled the system and i still have that horrible noise. However i have spotted a leek in the rubber hose that goes to the reservoir. So i suppose bleeding the system was pointless as air is just getting back in through the hole.
