martin1982
OK I've spent a good few days reading through the various threads covering smoke coming from the Supra but couldnt find a scenario similar to whats happening to me. On startup I'm getting a puff of blue smoke (which seems to be an indicator of stem seals). It's only on startup and is not constant. If I blip the throttle while on idle I get a puff of blue smoke but then all is normal again. Got a mate to follow me to see if I get any smoke while running under load, get no smoke when I accelerate hard or gently and no smoke when sitting in traffic. However, whenever I came off the throttle to slow down or just come off boost from accellerating hard there was a puff of grey/black smoke which seems to indicate over fueling. Any ideas what I could be looking at?
bigbloodyturbo
Valve stem seals. Blue smoke on startup and smoke when lifting off and over-run would say stem seals to me.
Tricky-Ricky
Did the smoke start to manifest once you went BPU by any chance? decat + free flow exhaust will show up weak/failing turbo seals, if progressed you will get smoke on hot idle, and you will see smoke on closed throttle/overrun. bodilx6
I've got exactly the same. After reading up on this for a year or so both here and on supraforums, I've concluded that its most likely the valve stem seals. But when talking to other people with experience they have told me both. When asking Chris Wilson, he told me that it really is too hard to tell for certain. Probably the best bet is to get both things done at the same time. Valve Stem are not a big problem when having everything apart anyway. They are harder to two but possible without removing the head, but choose this only and you might end up with a car still smoking... Its a hard one, which is why I haven't gotten it done yet. Also I would like to stay with the stock turbos, and then its rather a large and troublesome thing to do just for some smoke..
martin1982
Went BPU last June and it's only recently that there has been smoke, think I first noticed it about 2 weeks ago.

martin1982
Yeah thats what I thought. Just need to find someone to carry out the work for me. Heard there's a guy at AFR Tuning that does it cheaper than most garages!

oxi83
Depends on your garage. After asking around a little bit, I got around £600 in average... Doing this yourself isn't that hard, there are some good diy's on here ;-)
