Fearless
Has anyone purchased a new complete cylinder head from Toyota? if so do you know if it comes with the valve stem seals already fitted?
georigg
Hi Fearless, Cant say about Toyota, but I did buy a complete head a couple of years ago from BMW which was complete with all seals, valves camshafts etc. If your buying with valves supplied in the head, you can expect the seals to be fitte as well........dosnt make much sense to fit valves but not fit the seals when your buying the whole thing. Only thing to watch is where they offer individual component prices for all the parts, ie but a compete head should come, "complete". Guest Garfy
that can't be cheap?
Fearless
Yes it does, see attached. That's a shame, I was clutching at straws there. Just rebuilt an engine and it is a little bit smokey when starting from cold. last time I rebuilt it I got the piston ring gaps a bit small and ended up melting 3 pistons so this time I went to the other extreme but may have overdone it slightly I was just hoping (against all odds) that maybe the smoke was because the new head I put on did not come with valve stem seals. that can't be cheap? It had been delivered to a garage by mistake about 7 years ago and never collected so I did not pay too much for it. TLicense
I bought a new cylinder head a couple of months ago. No, the valve stem seals are NOT included. That said, it would have been pretty obvious to you when you were assembling it that they weren't included. Did you build it yourself or did you get someone else to do it. Fearless
This was a complete head, valves springs, retainers buckets, shims (all gapped correctly)and cams. I just assumed that they would not have assembled it without stem seals so did not think to check, however due to the smoke when cold I was kind of hoping that maybe it did not have them. I will take a look sometime just in case but will not have time this week
TLicense
So you've just put this engine together yeah? Has it done many miles? Brand new engines tend to smoke due to the rings not being fully bed in. After about 20 miles or so this should go. Also I should say that I bought just the casting as indicated in Nic's image, it definitely did not come with seals. If you've bought a built head, then it may have had the seals. To be honest though, I didn't know you could get a fully built head.... Edited May 4, 2009 by TLicense (see edit history)
