Ended up getting the above with the 18-55 IS lense and its an amazing piece of kit.

Nice pics Imi.

I'm seriously considering the 550D too, although I was advised to wait for the upcoming Canon D60 or Nikon 3100 as they would be better cameras to grow into? I'm not sure the latter would warrant the investment to a beginner like me though? I seem to get conflicting advice depending on what side of the Nikon/Canon camp I speak to.

For a starter like myself either of the brands would be more than adequate. I prefer Canon cause of the brand.

The 550 has plenty of features to keep me busy and is a wonderful piece of kit. Extremely comfortable to work with too.

best to spread your investment in not just the body but also quality lenses with good optics.

Well, ended up opting for the 550D with 18-55 kit lens. Now it's just a case of learning how to take decent pictures with the thing.

congrats....

Great DSLR and I would recommend getting a Nifty Fifty lens, cracking lens for the money :-)

thats next on the cards for portraits.....
