jonathanc
Nice So we have narrowed down the body to D90 and lens (for the moment - depends on budget) the 16-85 Nikor lens. Now to shop Lens: Quick google suggests cheapest 16-85 Nikon is £399.99 (lol) here Body: cheapest I can find is £539 here Rough calculation tells me it totals to almost a grand Unless you guys know a good place to shop? I just used Google Shopping. The 35mm seems like a good lens but I am just not sure about the zooming. From my understanding there's no zooming at all (just auto focus) but sometimes I might want to do a lil zooming. edit: mmmmm...Lbm u seem like a keen photographer yourself
Lbm
ok, 16-85 recommendation stands... you have a fairly mixed range of needs, which in my bag equates to 3 separate lenses Its a good mix of uses, etc.... Lets see what everyone else suggests. I'm looking at this if I go Nikon and 15-85mm if I go Canon. Makes for a nice walk around lens that's also a bit wider than the usual 18mm end of things. The 16-85mm also has image stabilisation (Vibration Reduction, VR) which won't stop motion blur, but could be useful in some low light situations. Reviews and details here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-B0013A1XDE-AF-S-DX-16-85MM/dp/B0013A1XDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1279834214&sr=8-1 Alternatively a more expensive F2.8 zoom may be prefered. Lbm
Watch out for Digital Rev. You may need to pay import tax that they don't mention. They ship from HK IIRC.

I just used Google as want a quick estimate for prices. I do know people in HK though so theorectically I could get them to send me as gift? Although I guess the warranty and stuff would be invalid. From my understanding there's no zooming at all (just auto focus) but sometimes I might want to do a lil zooming. It's a cracking lens mate. I do have the 18-55mm kit lens as well as a 55-200mm zoom and neither are on my camera nearly as much as the 35mm. If you want to zoom....move your feet

I can then get a chance to familiarise myself with the camera before deciding the next step. hmmm eBay here I come Have to find out how much my G1 would sell first tho... Lbm
Earlier you place a link to Ken Rockwell's site. He's the original 'marmite' kind of photographer. If you go back to that point in the thread, you will see how this confusion unfolded. Anyway a D90 + 35mm prime sounds nice, but it's not that wide of course. Was a random quick google link I pulled. His site seemed to have some comprehensive reviews. I am reading about the 16-85 and it does seem impressive (good mix of tele and wide) but it also look a bit bulky. Meh...so undecided. Also also found the Sigma 17-35 but I've heard Sigma lenses are not really good.
Ian W
Register here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk and see if there's anyone local to you that'll let you have a play with their camera? They're a very nice bunch and may well help you out. If not, head to your nearest shop and try for yourself? I would offer to let you have a play with my D40x and 35mm but I'm in Glasgow

I am pretty much sold for the body (D90) it's just the lens I am doubtful. The 35mm seems to have a pretty wide FoV but that would also mean the background is almost always blurred? Good idea, just don't get sucked in by their 'kit deals' which generally involve pretty crap lenses. The lens does give fantastic depth of field when wide open, however you can easily close it down a bit to get the background in focus as well
Thorin
3) Something non Canon - been using Canons a lot so fancy a change. Nikon then. They're the only two makes I'd choose due to the availability of lenses for them.
jonathanc
Bit the bullet and went out to get the D90 with kit lens (18-105). I am loving it so far. Tons and tons of features and very intuitive to use. However, so far I am a little bit let down by the picture quality. For the moment I have set it to JPG (fine) but I noticed some areas looked poorly developed. Perhaps I should do more tests as the test shots were done in my room plus I haven't really went through the whole manual as yet.

Without insulting you, did you check your shots etc on the LCD at the time? Perhaps a bit of exposure compensatio here and there was required? And in your room, did you use a big enough aperture or high enough ISO? Still, enjoy the camera, (D90 is in my top 3 of what to get list )and I'd like to see how you get on it with it over the coming months

What settings are you using at the moment - auto, program, or full manual? ISO settings? Also, one of the first things I did when I got the 50D was switch to RAW - it's so much easier to correct exposure in post-processing than JPG. Still, enjoy the camera, (D90 is in my top 3 of what to get list )and I'd like to see how you get on it with it over the coming months hehe, I didn't really dive into the settings yet. I just finished fully charging the batt so got a little curious and took some quick shots. I think it's in Full auto as I didn't change any settings at all. I took a few shots of my kid which I used Full Auto and also the Potrait mode and also few quick shots of my PC and view outside window but mostly with Full Auto, Full Auto no Flash, Potrait , Macro and Landscape modes. Some shots were ok but some shots look a bit underexposed and some were a bit blur (I took quick shots of the kid but I should have used the burst mode instead I guess). I will admit I have no clue what I was doing and after inspection it could be my PC monitor that is not displaying the intended results. I will have to do more testing when I have the time (have a MS exam tomorrow so nervous!) I am still thinking if I should use RAW. JPG seems so much more convenient Anyways, plenty of experts here so I am not worried! I think I will first explore the basics before diving into PASM though... martini
Don't bother with RAW unless you want to do a lot of heavy editing. You can still shoot very large jpegs, edit them and have great results. RAW was devised for Pros, so you may as well save the disk space and RAM if you're just having some fun

I do like to take a lot of photos and somewhat fussy about my cameras hence why I chose to go for a D90. I think it would be a good long term investment and so far it certainly seems like it with all its functions!
imi
I'm looking into the canon 550d - any thoughts on that kit? Ended up getting the above with the 18-55 IS lense and its an amazing piece of kit.
