Ian W
Looking to upgrade my Olympus compact to a DSLR and was wondering what current users can recommend to me Basically, I don't need one that's overly fancy or complicated as it will be my first one. Value for money is what I'm looking for but that said I don't mind spending a bit more if it's worth it in the long run. So, what can you recommend? Thanks in advance Ian
Lbm
I would think the Nikon D40 is still a firm favourite, value for money entry level DSLR http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000KIX65S?ie=UTF8&tag=httpwayfarer2-21&gclid=CO7X1fysoJoCFaKF7Qod_GAF-Q

I was looking at the Nikon D60, but if the D40 will do everything I need it to then that would be the one to go for (and give me a bit of extra cash to put towards lenses etc). Can anyone comment on whether it would be worth going for a D60 over a D40?

SMiFFAD
Canon 450D.. its the newer version of the 400D i have, very pleased with it (OR you could find a 400D very cheaply now as its last years model)
Wez
Nikon or Canon, wouldnt bother with anything else. I have a Canon 400D and as already mentioned you could prob get one quite cheap as the newer model is out, the Nikon are great and seem to favoured more by Semi-Pros over the Canon units. Henk
I started photography last year and am also an anthusiastic amateur, but I went for the Sony Alpha A300 http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Sony_Alpha_DSLR_A300/ No complaints from me, advantages seem to be: Image Stabilisation built into body so lenses cheaper and Sony is trying to break into the camera market so their prices are very competitive. I have no regrets at all.
dublin lad
i got an olympus e-500 ok its a few years old but in cracking condition and a whole heap of extras if ur need a cheap buy to get used to the whole idea. very cheap price.
Ian W
Have to admit, I'm swaying towards the Nikon just now over the Canon. As per my previous question, is the D60 worth the extra over the D40?
robin
I would only ever consider a nikon or a cannon for a DSLR. For entry level slrs thats the Cannon 1000d or nikon D40. Personally I prefer cannon cameras. If you do get a nikon watch out for the newer and older nikon fits and old lenses as some older lenses wont autofocus on the new bodies. If you can splash out on about £500 the new 450D is an awesome camera and the large LCD is great for reviewing photos when your out and about. Why not go to somewhere like jessops and play about with some of them and see what you fancy?
foodfreak
Jessops were doing good deals on the Nikon D60, & Nikon were doing a £30 cashback offer....not sure if this is still running. The deal I had was the D60 the latest VR lens & a 70-300 lens, 8GB memory card & 4GB flash drive for £540....& has to send the receipt to Nikon for the cash back offer. Takes bloody good pictures too:D
jacko
I bought a Sony A200 as my first DSLR, can't fault it
SupraGirlie
You might want to consider a D40X as it's a slight improvement over the D40. Both are good entry level DSLR's.
Mas
I have been using my D40X for the past 2 years and its a very smooth kit and easy to use with great pic quality etc

Thanks for that, however you know I'm going to ask what is improved?
Guest ugp
The D40X has the upgraded sensor, 12mp instead of 6 and a bit. What about the Fuji S5? They cost around £400 It uses Nikon lenses, for wedding / portrait pictures, its absolutely amazing. I have a Nikon D3 also, and prefer the S5 for the above. SupraGirlie
Better resolution on the X, 4 million more effective pixels, slightly larger sensor, better ISO control, 3.0 FPS compared to 2.5 FPS.

AndyT
Basically. There is very little difference, price or performance, between Canon or Nikon. Try both to find out how much better one works for you over the other. There's no other way.
suprasonic
i have had my d40 for just over 2 years and really can fault it

I think the best thing to do is to get down to a camera shop, and actually handle the Nikon's and the Canon's so you can get a feel for them. Guest ugp
It's 10 not 12mp Thanks for correcting me, in all honesty, I've never gone on a megapixel hunt, I dont feel they're important really.

But if you go to a forum, the punters are not happy very quickly. Don't know why.
grahamc
What sort of photos are you planning on taking? Whats your budget? Canon vs Nikon - comes down to feel of the camera, how you find using it, etc. The way I see it, Nikon has the better DSLR bodies, but canon has a much better lens line-up. I have a D40X and will be upgrading to a D300 shortly. Full frame at a later date
