PC help - internet connection

My PC at home is connected to the Virgin modem thing via RJ45, which is via cable broadband to the world. All works fine.

We used to have a Belkin wireless router as well, PC connected through that. Which also worked until the router kept overheating and being stupid. I think when I unplugged it I swapped the PC to auto-IP rather than a set IP in the router, but not too sure.

Anyway, took my mums laptop home to update her AV (she's on dialup), plugged in the net cable in the back, set to auto-IP and it's coming up as limited or no connectivity! Why's that? What am I not doing? Shouldn't it just work? Do I need to phone Virgin or use their stupid CD (if I can find it)? Do I need to tell it not to use dialup or something? When I go to IE it just comes up with the dialup connection thing all the time. Plug the cable back into my PC and it works straight away.

I also plugged the router back in quickly, neither PC or laptop will get a connection through the router now, it's as if Virgin won't let anyone except my PC connect to the net - even the router. What's going on?

reboot the router again and make sure the adsl light is back on before doing a repair on your network connections. To do this right click on your network connection and choose repair.

If the adsl light doesnt come back on the router then ring virgin.
