Kitchens/Cooker Hoods and Building Regulations

Can anyone help clear something up for me. We have recently had a new extension built to the rear of the house to make the kitchen bigger. In the newly extended part we have just had the kitchen fitted. The new part of the kitchen has a vaulted ceiling and as a result the cooker hood we fitted with the kitchen is just on recirculating mode with no vent to the atmosphere.

The problem is the building inspector has been out to have a look today and is not happy that the cooker hood does not vent to atmosphere. The thing is when the plans were submitted we did not state where in the extension the kitchen was going to be located as we were still undecided.

Is it a legal requirement that the hood should vent to atmosphere or is the building inspector being a jobsworth?? Might I add that from start to finish of the project that the building inspector has thrown numerous spanners in the works and our builder has never known any inspector like him!

Thanks chaps, looks as though I will have to get the extraction sorted then. The annoying thing is if the inspector had have come out when he was supposed to, before the kitchen was fitted then he would have been none the wiser

Still a jobsworth if you ask me;)
