Doctors don't often recommend them unless you ask, but they are excellent at finding out how well your system is working and finding bacteria's etc. You may have a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, which is very common and in many people causes stomach ulcers and stomach inflammation/discomfort etc. Many people have Helicobacter, but it only affects a few in a negative manner.
