Guest n0Odle
I bought a 1998 tt supra 3 weeks ago and been in afghanistan on an army contract, so i have yet to drive the car yet but quick question, im getting parts put in before i get home... one of which i have a question on, the boost controller. What is the stock boost? and how much boost should i push through it on stock turbos/ internals... on a full apexi exhaust / and intakes and BOV.. SECOND WHAT BOV IS THIS .. is it hks?. i just dont want to get a BOV that sounds like every other turbo engine car. i like the supras bov sound.. its NOT common THANK you in advance!! merckx
Have a read of this, obviously referring to the appropriate section aswell - US spec Supra or Japan Spec Supra (J spec - import) http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=94705
Guest n0Odle
thank you... but what about that youtube video? any idea on the BOV? that is in the car
Steviekid
thank you... but what about that youtube video? any idea on the BOV? that is in the car I think the noise you're referring to is actually turbo stall.
Scott
If you want the turbo stall noise then just remove the BOV and cap up the ports. No idea what it sounds like on twins though, only ever heard it on a single.
Steviekid
No idea what it sounds like on twins though, only ever heard it on a single. Not like that video! I blocked mine off once for fault finding. I wouldn't like to hammer about in a bpu supra with no bov/recirc valve of any kind though, especially not with ceramic turbos. Its compressor stall that causes the noise, absolutely nothing to worry about at our boost levels Out of curiosity, what did it sound like? Was it nice? Steviekid
Out of curiosity, what did it sound like? Was it nice? It was pretty quiet actually. Noticeable though. At the time the boost was spiking (momentarily) at 1.4bar so it's probably even quieter at safe boost levels.
Guest n0Odle
on the video its a BOV.. because every supra ive heard, they have that BOV sound.. its like a whistle / whomping sound... not like a normal PFSSSTT sound of a normal blow off valve.. really best way to explain it.. i would really love to have the same sound and im afraid by upgrade the BOV im going get the normal PFFSSSTT sound Edited April 30, 2009 by n0Odle (see edit history)

Its a combination of a BOV and compressor surge. The make of BOV won't make a difference as it won't make that noise on a TT.

Scott
There are slight differences in the noise of BOV's but none will make the noise you are after. There are a lot of clips of different sounding BOV's on here and on youtube. HKS is one of the more popular models, IMO it needs a purple fin to sound good though. Guest n0Odle
what is a purple fin? that a brand? im a noobie when it comes to turbos. I just hate the normal AEM sound of a BOV...

I thought that was the manufacturer of ECU's and other electronic gizmo's. The purple fin is an optional extra for HKS dump valves. The fin's can be changed over for different dump noises. There are gold ones, silver ones and purple ones. The purple is quite hard to come by but sounds the best IMO.
Guest n0Odle
you have a link that comes with a full kit? is it change able? AEM makes a BOV as well in the states. its what most dodge srt4 use.. and is it easy to switch these fins out?

They come seperately. Nic in here supplies us them for a good price, as far as i know he can get the fins too. I don't know if you would be cheaper getting them over your end of the pond or contacting him. Do a search for HKS BOV on here and on youtube and see what you think. Guest n0Odle
funny thing is we cant see youtube anymore .. they blocked it from our network.. ill just buy all the fins lol
Guest n0Odle
waste gate on stock turbos a waste of money?
Steviekid
waste gate on stock turbos a waste of money? It's got a wastegate already. Do you mean an external wastegate/screamer pipe? I don't think you can get one that fits on with the sequential system. If you want a supra that makes tons of noise on WOT with a chattering BOV you're going to have to buy a single turbo. Scott
why cant we have best of both worlds :-/ i think eventually i will have to go single turbo so i can get 850whp *sigh* The sequential system has an internal wastegate. The only way i can think of making it external would be to fabricate your own exhaust manifold and weld up the wastegate. Would be a silly amount of money for something so trivial. Steviekid
Would be a silly amount of money for something so trivial. Or, you could record a single turbo noise onto a CD then play it through your stereo......
Guest n0Odle
i was talking about the chattering BOV .. thats actually a good way to put it "chattering" i gotta find some way to make it chatter on the twin turbo.. maybe open the BOV to the extreme.. or use those purple fins you were talking about..
