evanshaw
Hi everyone, Have done a lot of searching tonight and am confused between stem seals and turbo seals. Took the supra out tonight to get some petrol. Got to a nice clear straight and hit WOT. 2nd turbo didn't seem to be coming online. Tried a few more times, nothing, then I noticed it huge clouds of blue smoke. Engine seems to be pulling OK though, am just not getting boost. Smoke billowed out all the way home. Is this likely to be the stem seals or the turbo seals? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
ellis
If it's stem seals you'll get a puff of blue smoke at start up. If its turbos you'll get the smoke when the car is on throttle on the move. Yours sounds like turbo 2 to me.
Mike
I'm a complete novice (and NA owner), but I thought if the turbos go it's white smoke? and oil if it's blue? Sorry for the tangent
supspower
Tends to be blue for turbo and White for stem, does sound like your 2nd turbo seals have gone

ellis
If its oil that's leaking from either they will both be blue! AFAIK if its white its overfuelling issues (of course, I have been known to be so wrong it hurts!!)
Missile
I think... Oil = Blue (Smelly) Over Fuel = White / black Water in the engine (Head gasket) = White Depending what's wrong with the turbo I'd say Puffy Thick White. Took out two turbo's on my old GT turbo. Could not see anything in the rear veiw for the white clouds.
evanshaw
Thanks everyone, yes it is a bit smelly like burning oil. And yes it appears to only be when the car is on throttle. Not much smoke came out when I pulled up on the drive and let her idle, well no way near as much as when I was driving home, it looked like I had a Whacky Racers style smoke screen! :-) I have a spare set of turbo's, does anyone have any idea how much the labour to swap them out might be?
