Warning from the moderators - this is NOT how to fix a knocking engine mount!

For as long as i have had my car (1 year 3 months) there has been a knocking noise from the front / middle, every time i pull away and stop, and also when accelerating when moving slowly on hard lock.

I've tested every bush and ball joint numerous times on the front and tightened my sub frame bolts numerous times also, but with no luck. BUT today ive solved it.

Its was my LH engine mount making the knocking noises!

There is a round metal casing surrounding the rubber part of the mount, and every time i leavered the engine it would move and become loose, so i welded it to the top metal part of the mount and BINGO, no more knocking!!

Its flipping fantastic. such a pain in my neck for so long!

So basically i'm hoping that this may help other people! :D

I had an annoying knock coming from the back for a year, I took it to a several place's who said it was the top mounts, or that they could not find the problem, I found out a guy on here has started his own specialist garage right near me so I took it there straight away after driving it he said Suspension struts. Anyways I get all round shocks and springs and the problem went, It made me so happy having to go through a year with this knocking over any kind of bump. I can understand how good it feels, Do you still expect it to knock when you pull away then smile when it's all quite?

Welding up the engine mount to fix its knocking?? Bit like welding up a shock absorber `cos it's knocking, not REALLY the right way to do it :) Get a new pair of mounts on it, they are a normal service item now the cars are getting elderly.

100% agree with this!!!

OMG I can't believe you think welding up a part that is supposed to move is a good idea!

Never EVER recommend that again.

Edited first post.

A possibly better and more NVH friendly fix would be to do what I did on my old Daihatsu Charade TD

The engine mount was split where the two rubber 'arms' went from the centre to the outer part of the mount, a bit like the one below.

I filled the lot (the splits and the voids inbetween the 'arms') with a rubber compound called Loctite 5900, a sort of low volatility silicone. This sets moderately hard and is nearly as tough as the original rubber, yet still quite compliant.

One fixed engine mount within 10 minutes (plus curing time) :D

hi guys, ok i wish i'd looked at this thread earlier. I would like to address this quickly!

First thing i would like to say is i have already ordered a new mount from toyota, i did it this morning before looking at this thread and was going to post that up now!

My welding was actually a couple of tac's on the metal shroud, which was NEVER going to be a permanent fix!! I'm NOT crazy! It was just to see if this did stop the knocking noise, or if it was something else!

So if ive scared a couple of you, then im sorry, i was going to post up here again to say i had ordered my new mount.

I never ment it to sound like 'this is how to fix it', i was just TRYING (and failing) to point out that it was the engine mount which made the knocking noise, and if any other people have the same knocking noise then they should check their mounts!

sorry for causing the mods hassle

I'm leaving this here because it highlights something else to check when you get a knocking noise. I think the point about welding it up has been made and there is no need to labour the issue :)

Thanks ian

Yeah it was never ment to be a 'weld up your mount thread', only a helpful one. So hopefully some one does benefit from this!

Again apologies:)
