philstowell
Hi all, ive decided toi try and spray and fit my bumper myself, i dont know when im ganna start but i have my eyes on some of the spray kits and all the paints. just a quick one, has anybody ever used http://www.expresspaints.co.uk/catalog/products_new.php and are they any good quality wise? and im thinking of a clark spray gun, im ganna use a compressed air container to start with incase i just dont have the touch, but all being well ill get a compressor. i havnt got a clue what im doing so dont expect any pictures too soon, but i will get there im sure. im probably ganna buy the kit at the end of the month and take it from there in slow time to try and get it right and good. i will try and get some pics of the disasters that are about to follow as its my 1st time doing anything like this. cheers for reading this. phill:banghead:

merckx
Will you be using 2 pack paint? I painted one of my side skirts with a Devilbiss gun and a secondhand compressor. The finish was very good indeed, all the work is in the preparation and the spraying is easy. Lukeyboy2k
If you're doing it for a sense of achievement, and you have suitable premises in which to carry out the work then go for it and good luck. It can be very satisfying. White is one of the easier colours to get good results with. If however, you're only doing it to save a bit of money, I'd get someone else to do it for you. By the time you've purchased all the required materials and hardware, it'll probably cost more than having it done professionally. For paints and consumables I thoroughly recommend this company. The website isn't particularly slick, but in my opinion the customer service is very good. http://www.body-shop-warehouse.co.uk/
Aero-M
Good on you for having a go. I once sprayed some new panels for one of my spitfires, i was quite pleased with the results. As said preparation is the key. I would however never go near my Supra with paint.

Matt H
I remember the first and last bit of spraying i tried when i was 18. It actually turned out good, but the main problem is having a nice clean environment to do the actuall spraying. You need it uber free of dust particle etc otherwise they will stick in with the paint on your bodywork. The actual spraying process was no problem, as long as you keep it a distance away from the item you are spraying and take smooth even stokes with the spray gun, you can't go much wrong. JustGav
Good luck chap... It isn't too bad to do.. As said all along, it is in the prep work If you don't want to buy a compressor, although I'd really recommend getting one, what about hiring one? A decent gun is key, Iwata or Devilbiss are the front runners IMHO
Matt H
Like Gav says, you need the right tools for the job. Compressors are readily available for hire. Machinemart seem to always have loads in the windows when i drive past at the one not a million miles from me. If you're tyring to save money though, if might not be worth doing it yourself as you will have to get all the right tools. Might actually be cheaper to pay a sprayer, plus at least you get a decent job. You might end up having to pay for it to be re-done anyway!! JustGav
Forgot to add... Once you get the gun, compressor and associated bits, get down to the local scrappie and pick up some random panels, simply to play with before you do the actual work. Get used to the way the gun feels, how the various controls affect it, how to get the best paint mix, getting the pressure right. All little things that you really want to sort BEFORE doing it Also pop down to your local paint shop and buy some random colour in the same paint, they usually have some pre-mixed stuff that a customer didn't want and it is cheaper and great for practice. My little compressor is 50l, and it has to kick in a good few times doing a panel.
