Big Mark
My training partner moved back to Cyprus at the end of last year and invited me out there to live/work with him and his family. As I can't find a proper job here I am seriously coidering moving out there next month! My friend lives in the north side of the island. He has set up business's connected to various areas of the building/propery market and is also looking to open a gym. Both areas I know quite a lot about. I'm just spinning my wheels here doing odd jobs for people so think I need to go for it. Plus another mate joined him there last week. Any members lived/from Northern Cyprus? What do all you reckon? Lbm
Never been to the Northern Cyprus, but I have to the South. If your life is a bit groundhog day here, go just for the change. You can always come back. In addition, a new life awaits...!?
Big Mark
I think I will. I've been wanting to move away for years but the something has always held me back, I'm not going to get a better chance than this so see no reason not to go. Have been cutting my ties and sorting stuff out ready to get away. Even gave my parents my £3k plasma at the weekend If all goes to plan I hope to be there by the start of June. Hasen't been a conflict since 1974 when Turkey invaded. One thing you have to beware of in the North is that it is still a psuedo state, and as such is not recognised by any country in the world other than Turkey as it was formed as part of an illeagal invasion. As such, alot of the property out there is built on illeagal land and can be taken back if an agreement is ever reached. Only land that originally belonged to current inhabitants and/or was legally tranferred after is safe to build on/acquire. I know someone will mention the Cherie Blair case but it has somehow been over-ruled.
turbonut
Northern Cyprus was invaded, occupied and taken over by Turks in the 1970's. Theres some friction around the border between north and south but you should be ok if your on the coast. Cost of living is fairly high (quite a few millionaire's in Southern Cyprus) but Cypriot's are lovely people, as hospitable as Greeks. It sounds like a great opportunity and you will have the back up of your friend and his family whilst your there. Go for it!!! Pete
I think the EU would side with the Greeks on this one, if you buy a house from the Turks you may not own it should the border dispute ever be 'resolved'. I had a friend own a house in the southern side an moved out for a year. He tried to setup a business and was constantly knocked back, eventually running into the local gangsters who drove him up to a lonely hut on a hill and persuaded him to not setup a business in competition with the Greeks. So he gave up and moved back to blighty. I went out there and found it far to British, LOTS of expats out there. I bought in Rhodes last year. erol_h
Ive had a few friends and family move back to cyprus north and south and have all come back as they can't adjust to living out there. If you do go don't sell everything and leave just incase you want to come back.
ilicos
from what i know there is still a lot of tension between north/south! Mate, you are talking to a Cypriot who has lived in Cyprus all his life and served two years in the Cypriot army. If anything, things are calmer than ever with open borders now and free movement. There hasn't been any physical violence in almost 15 years!!!

CJ
My advice would be to read again what ilicos has written as his statement regarding the land ownership etc very pertinent.

ellis
Just in the news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8022238.stm I'll never know why people buy in the north, we bought in the south and were warned about the possible danger of having land reclaimed in the north and were advised to stay away, quite strongly! Guess they bought it cheap and were prepared to take the chance - oops!
ilicos
What people don't realise, is that people were forced from their homes. Then you have others who do not understand the circumstances, make up their own version of events and think that what happened in 1974 was justified. If I was to take your house and sell it would you not eventually want it back by any means possible? Developers out there have been playing 'pass the parcel' with other people's homes and when the music stops, the one holding that parcel will lose the lot. The problem is that the people who have been buying these properties are mainly UK residents and they are starting to feel animosity towards the Cypriots who only want back what is rightfully theirs!!!
