Branners
Hi folks, One of my kids goldfish seems unwell. It is just sitting on the bottom of the tank, it moves around every so often but not much. It is normally swimming round the top of the tank quite happilly. It is a black moor goldfish. We always did the water change every 2 weeks, but forgot for 4 weeks and now the fish looks extremely ill. Any recommendations on how to keep it alive? We have done a 20% water change now and we are hoping it recovers.
adnanshah247
mine did that for a while and then after i cleared up the tank and put some chemicals to clear the crap from tap water it was ok. but then again my other goldfish did that and eventually died, just stayed in one place right at the bottom and would move when i tap the glass. chris2o2
Pour a shot of whisky in with it ? I seem to re-call hearing this move done before , maybe its a load of old cobblers though...
Mike
If it's a black moors it should be easy enough to replace
Charlotte
My brother was allowed a black moor, and in the same tank as mine and my sister's goldfish. They subsequently died later and the black beast was fine. RIP fishy.
Pete
Find a 'spare' one that looks the same just in case.

Scott
A shot of whiskey as above, i don't know exactly what it does but it works. I'm not sure what the actual mix is so i would keep it quite low. A shot to 5 litres or so.
Tricky-Ricky
There are tonic salts that you can add to the water, which may help.
Rob
I thought you took the fish out and put it in a separate container with a salty/tonic mix for a few hours. Google will have it, its where I go for all my pond life requirements.
Rob Dublin
Used to change a lot more than 20% of the water. Put some some sterilising drops (not milton or bleach, there's proper stuff) and some fish food into a large bowl and lob in the fish. Lob the whiskey into a glass, add ice and enjoy
mark newman
you have got a air pump in the tank have you if not you should that will keep your fish alive.
SupraStar 3000
Get some air in the tank. Anything that makes small air bubbles might help, although I don't recommend farts.
jim
We'd one that did the same thing, it turned out that the gravel at the bottom of the tank was small enough for it to suck up into its mouth, it had swallowed a few bits and couldn't keep itself 'afloat' due to the extra weight of the stones (stupid fish). It died, but I was able to replace it before the kids noticed.
dani_r
Is your fish depressed?
Matt H
Have you checked the spark plugs?
robin
Does it look damaged or unusual in anyway? I doubt it is down to lack of oxygen as all the fish would be displaying symptoms then. It might be worth doing another big waterchange and make sure the water is chlorinated/conditioned before it goes in the tank. Stir up the gravel and suck out the muck, you will be amazed at how much crap collects there. If there are any signs of bacterial infections or damaged fins, bulging scales etc and you can get to a local fish/pet shop, look for some myxazin and treat the whole aquarium with that. Also what do you feed them? What type of filteration do you use? The above will probably cost more then a new fish... but I dont think thats the way to look at it.
