Supra alternative!

Hi all

Hmm perhaps the Supra owners club isn't the best place to ask this but I'd really appreciate your help! I'm looking for an alternative to my Supe. I've had her from August last year, and it's been great, but it's time to move on...

I basically want a car with (a lot) more power. But TT Supras are out for reasons of practicality. I need space for my son and his stuff. More than 3 doors isn't essential though so I want a genuine 2+2 coupe with some boot space! It needs to be RWD or 4WD, and supra-esque reliability would be a bonus...

Budget is variable really - I plan on getting the work done to my Supe required to put her on the market (new clutch and exhaust), get a year's ticket put on and sell. I can then either buy outright with the proceeds plus some extra to give me a budget of around £4000, or buy a complete shed of a car for £500, insure it TP only and save like hell to the £7000 mark or for as long as the shed lasts... Not willing to go finance/HP route, as I like having spare available for my little one each month.

Cars I've thought of so far:

Skyline GT-R: perhaps not as reliable as I'd like, hard to find a good one even for £7000?

Impreza Type-R: Seems to be the favourite, although image and engine reliability seem to count against.

Celica GT-Four: Is this car really as practical and quick as the others?

E36 M3? Definitely can't get an E46 for that sort of money!

I've even thought of ones totally out of left-field: Nissan Pulsar Gti-R springs to mind, and thought about forfeiting RWD/4WD for a tuned Starlet Glanza with an LSD...

Any other suggestions / thoughts?

Cheers

Luke

Out of the cars you've listed I'd pick the GT4 everytime

Cool, thanks for your reply. Does it have the necessary space? I'm aware that as standard the JDM GT4 had 255 bhp... What sort of mods would be required to bring it up to ~ 300 bhp? Would that be achievable with say intake/remap/exhaust upgrades with a boost controller? I want the car to be significantly quick, not just brisk. Will the standard internals take a significant amount more power?

what about an evo? 4 doors a big boot and massive tuneablility. Ive always been particularly tempted by the evo 6 :)

Nothing wrong as such, but aren't they quite unreliable? I got the impression they run quite a stressed engine, hence needing service more often than most...

Why does nobody ever even think of the aristo? Uber bargain of a car and has the same 2jz-gte engine thats in the supra. In fact if it wasn't for the aristo test bedding the engine for two years before the supra production the car may have ended up with the 1jz in it.

There's some quality mk2's available with alot of upgrades over on the aristo forum as well. Supra power and upgrade ability with back doors and a huge boot.

That would be my choice. Some great bargains there. :)

Dangerous Brain: not a bad idea, I particularly like that one in black too. They're a big beast though, and it seems manual shift is out :( but well worth a test drive I'd think! Thanks.

Rich: sadly not on my budget :(

Does anyone have any experience with the cars above, or any more hidden gems?

Ah but 6 speed conversion in the future and hey tiptronic isn't as bad as straight auto!! Anees's one is up your way if he still has it.

Was going to ask if there were any aristo owners local to me: do you think it's worth dropping him a line?

[edit] Looks as if his car's now sold. Any other aristo people near the West Mids?

The ST205 GT-Four is faster and more reliable than the other rally slags of the era. It also has better brakes and is very easy to get 300bhp out of - BPU pretty much. It's a bit of a backroad weapon like that. Better looking too IMO! It's Supra like in it's rear bulging haunches.

Practicality wise they are hugely practical - will seat two adults in the back comfortably and have a big boot.

The thing to watch out for with them is that the suspension figure of 8's and banana arms have been done. They need doing around 70k miles and it'll cost you around a grand to get done...

Cheers,

Brian.

I have an EVO6 and my bro has an EVO4... both cars have proven to be very reliable.

Mainly because we have not modified them too much.

Both cars come rated at 280bhp+ standard, and simple de-cat, manual boost controller and filter sees them approaching 300bhp+ with ease.

For reliability purposes and power this is as far as you need to take them for everyday use.

The frequent servicing that you mention is all about the oil change.... especially on the GSR versions that have the AYC.

Both mine and my bro's are the RS versions without the AYC diff. So servicing is much like any 'normal' car.

For comparison I had a GT4 previous to the EVO6... and in terms of performance the EVO6 (and even the EVO4) is a league ahead in every aspect over the GT4.

But the problem is that a lot of EVOs have been modified significantly and this is where the reputation of unreliability arises.

I'd say you would not go far wrong to choose either GT4 or EVO or Subaru... but keep to the clean cars.

Becks and Tom: thanks for your suggestions. Becks, I wouldn't have dreamt of a Volvo to be honest, although that white one is definitely an attractive car! If it was RWD / 4WD it'd probably be on the shortlist. Tom - that vid is mental, I thought WOW if only they went like that as stock!

Brian, AJI and GrahamC: your replies have been really useful - I'm a little reassured by my various choices, and thinking perhaps it's not a bad thing to have a wide-ish range of potential cars to choose from... That way I can wait for the 'right' car to appear (in terms of things like FSH, sensible mods etc), rather than worrying too much about having a particular model.

I take it everyone is agreed I need to be aiming towards the bigger budget then? There are certainly some nice-looking ST205s on Pistonheads at my lower £4000 budget (with fig-8s done as well as good SH and BPU), but all the Evos and Scoobys are right sheds! When you start looking at scoobys around £7000 though, you start seeing names like JM-Imports and Newera :sly:

Worth the extra outlay? That £3000 difference could do a lot of upgrades and servicing to a GT-4!

Just had a look at the pics of your car - it's a pretty thing actually! A genuine 300RWHP is not to be sniffed at either: but you seem on first glance to have done some pretty extensive mods... Nice cold-air feed :eyebrows: Could be worth a look, especially if it can get to those figures on £7000 less purchase price...

GrahamC: didn't the Type R engine have a bit of a rep for going bang?

In the meanwhile, I've been looking at this:

Ok so they're old cars with a reputation as money-pits and ugly as sin to boot... But I had a go in one recently - it was hilariously quick! Really, are these such a bad idea?
