Pot
For a start, carnivore faeces smell much nastier than herbivore faeces. I know horse shit does smell, but imagine a dog turd the size of a pile of horse droppings - you wouldn't want to be downwind of it. All that putrefying meat in carnivore faeces is gagtastic. Then you've got the parasites. Dog and cat shit carry toxocara, which can cause blindness. And sheepdogs can carry Echincoccus multicoccularis (sp?) - iirc, that can be pretty nasty. I don't know about parasites in horses, but my guess is that they aren't anyway near as dangerous, at least in the UK. Ah, that makes it OK for horses to crap where they like then?... Ewen
It's a topic thats been nagging me too. Those who drive around the countryside are saddled with a duty to be aware. It's equestrian of making allowances.

tbourner
I get annoyed with horses on the roads, probably because I live and drive on roads that horses use quite frequently. But I understand that they need to get from stable to field etc. and putting them into a horse box for a short journey isn't practical - so I give them the right amount of space and let them do their thing - it's not hard really is it? I do get more annoyed when I'm picking up a dog poo that's sitting 4 feet from a huge mound of horse poo that is just left there, but Cliff makes some good points so I give in to that as well. As for road tax, I have no idea what horse riders have to pay so I can't comment. If they're not insured and don't pay road tax then it's a bit unfair - bicycle riders are similar but for the damage they cause I don't think they would need to pay anything like what a horsist should pay.
