Guest willismaximus
Hi guys, my lovely Supra is determined to Bankrupt me, the latest problem is as follows. My fuel economy has taken a nose dive, I normally get 300 miles out of a full tank of petrol on my way to work and back, this week however i've gotten less than 200 even though i've been driving like my grandmother any thoughts on the sudden drop? Also, the red light on the dash featuring a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle now has a life of it's own and is lighting up occasionally for up to around 45 seconds at a time, any idea's? Thanks in advance peeps
mr lover
2 common solutions are, 02 sensor for the fuel brake fluid for the warning light
Guest willismaximus
Thanks for that, what sort of prices are the sensors and is it better to go with standard Toyota's or look for a cheaper alternative (If there is one?) and guess i should go check the brake fluid level too.... time to get the suit dirty
imi
should be around less than 100 for a new one.
supspower
Does the Engine Management Light come on along with the red triangle or just the red triangle? Think 02 sensors are £80 each from toyota not 100% sure though. You can get universal 02 sensors and wire them up to the existing cable that is usually alot cheaper Im sure someone with more experience with alternative 02 sensors than toyota ones will come along and advise shortly
Steviekid
Think 02 sensors are £80 each from toyota not 100% sure though. I was quoted over double that a year ago. I bought a bosch one instead!
Guest willismaximus
It's just the triangle popping up, doesn't seem to have a specific trigger, sometimes pops up when i accelerate and other times it pops up when i brake...... safe to say i'm confused
Guest willismaximus
Am i right in thinking there are two o2 sensors? The cars due an MOT soon so may have the o2 sensors done at the same time if i can find the funds. Would a garage be able to run a diagnostic on it to figure out the issue?
supspower
Yea there are two. Should be able to tell on a diagnostics whether the 02 sensors are working.
AndyT
I was quoted over double that a year ago. I bought a bosch one instead! They are £85 each. NA has two though. Research suggests that the cheaper aftermarket items are not up to the job. Sensor lasts approx 50k miles. So 85 quid per 50k isn't really expensive. Brake fluid needs to be topped right up to eliminate the warnings.
ClaireRZ-S
here is a useful thread http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=35920&highlight=diagnostics all you need is a paper clip
Guest willismaximus
A paperclip ehh? how very Maguyver lol think i may have to have a fiddle later on when i get the car home, think i'll steal a few paperclips from work too As for the brake fluid, is there a particlar type i should stick with and does it have a negative effect if you mix brands/types etc as i don't know what's currently in there? stevie_b
The golden rule for when the triangle warning light comes on is to get the error codes from the ECU. Dead easy, you'll need 3 mins of your time and a paperclip. It'll tell you what it thinks the cause is. Post up the codes on here if you're not sure what needs to be done. Edit: beaten by Claire! supspower
This should help http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=56684 not sure about brands but mixing types is bad
Guest willismaximus
The paperclip trick isn't going to give me a shock or anything is it? Call me paranoid but electric shocks aren't fun lol Also, is there anyway of figuring out what type of brake fluid i already have in there? stevie_b
No, it's perfectly safe. (just wear some rubber-soled shoes, just in case ) Many immobilisers will stop the engine MIL light (the orange engine piccy) from illuminating, so you'll probably need to turn off the immobiliser when you watch for the flashes. Guest willismaximus
And by the way, thanks for all the help on this guys 'n' gals, I officially owe you a beverage of some description
Guest willismaximus
Think i'll have to assume i have the stock Dot 4 brake fluid in there. The only other option would be to flush the lot and fill up with new but i'd need to pay a garage to do that for me as i haven't got anywhere to work on the car and to be fair i have neither an abundance of tools or mechanical know-how but unfortunately i'm pushed for cash at the moment. ClaireRZ-S
Nope you won't get a shock i've done this a few times does the brake fluid seem low can you see the level at all?
bigbloodyturbo
I topped my brake fluid off with Honda's Dot4. I went to toyota to get some fluid (after reading the little cap on the MC that said Dot3 only) and all toyota sells is Dot5.1, whereas honda still use Dot4 and they come in nice little cans instead of the big 1 litre cartons toyota's comes in. bigbloodyturbo
I bought dot 5.1 and topped it up with this and i've had no problems Yeah I was going to but I decided to wait till I flush all the fluid out and keep it all the same, then I'll use toyota's fluid. I just like the way honda sell their fluid and found it funny that they use Dot4 instead of Dot5, must be a difference somewhere. AFAIK no-one uses Dot3 anymore so I just figured 4 was closer to 3:)
Guest willismaximus
Right, i'm going into the carpark now to check my brake fluid level, shall we take bets on the likelyhood of me getting some sort of black oily substance on my light coloured suit?
