Pete
...or maybe not??? That's just aid for the suppliers of Rover who obviously aren't going to get paid. I guess they're hoping that they'll keep these companies in business. I'm not sure how if Rover were their main buyer in the first place though! SkyJawa
They aren't in receivership, they have simply asked Price Waterhouse for advice - the journalist that wrote that has already had a roasting...............
Pete
They aren't in receivership, they have simply asked Price Waterhouse for advice - the journalist that wrote that has already had a roasting............... I noticed that too. Once they get the bill off that lot they'll be stuffed anyway It also said that their supplier accounts had been withdrawn. If that IS true, then they're stuffed anyway without some cash injection from somewhere.
Muffleman
Didn't I read somewhere that the directors of the Pheonix Consortium were paying themselves £m's ??? Okay them taking £20k a year for a bit just to help out won't make a difference really, but seems a bit inappropriate. I would be sad to see MG\Rover go as the cars aren't that bad, they're just an easy target. I test drove the MG ZT 260 last year (the one with the 4.6v8 Mustang engine ) and I was very impressed, loved it in fact. Thing is I knew it would be worth about £4.80 in 3 years time. 'Tis a shame though. Matt
Paul
Another sad day for British manufacturing. As one of the Rover workers said yesterday, it's going to end up being a country of warehouses and McDonalds! Paul

And the advice is... Erm...BMW jumped ship Erm....Poor Designs Err...Resale vale NIL Err...Productivity crap Erm...No cash Err...Suppliers cut off credit Hey - pay me and I promise to give the same answer for £20,000 less! TLicense
I must admit I really do struggle to side with the company and their workers in these situations. I mean it's hardly a big suprise is it? It's been in the offing for years now, ever since BMW took over and flogged the whole lot off. Since the BMW sell off they've come up with how many new models? 1... 2? That rubbish urban car and the £80K super car. Hmmm something for everyone there! All the other cars are just facelift models of the cars that have been around since the early '90's. I mean FFS Honda even designed that one that's the latest 400 series re-make, as that was just a rebadged civic. If I was a worker for Rover in Brum, I'd have been looking for another job for about 3 or 4 years now. What are they waiting for? A healthy redundancy pay out? Unfortunately that'll all be gobbled up by the management multi million pound pension scheme. The thing is it's very hard to build a genuine business case when:- a) The management are looking out only for no.1 b) Nobody except Geordie Steve's dad wants to buy a brand new car that was designed probably in the 1980's. Am I being a little harsh?
Ian C
Harsh but fair. The workers have been screwed by the top cats who paid themselves miwyuns [/delboy] But the product line is hideously out of date and there is no cash to build or develop or keep going or anything. So pretty much they are dead. -Ian

MichaelG
Now would be the time to walk into a Rover dealership and make them a RIDICULOUSLY low offer for one of their brand new cars !! Considering they wont be able to honour any warranty etc, the cars are literally worthless ! Rosie...........this could be your opportunity to make a killing with your £500 go girl !! Something to compete with say Astra's or Focus'? Putting some trim on a 15 year old car and calling it new certainly doesn't flick my switch. Perhaps this is a prime example of natural selection? martynb
This goes back way further than BMW though - as long as I can remember they have had squillions of taxpayers cash pumped in to produce a succession of rubbish cars. Don't see why they should be eternally propped up whilst other businesses are allowed to go to the wall. Come to that why should the suppliers get special treatment, nothing to do with Labour marginal seats surely ?

Soonto_HAS_soop
All I can say is that I feel sorry for the 30,000 people that this will affect in a huge way. Lots of 1st tier suppliers dependent on MG Rover are going to fold due to this, so it is not only the OEM that is going to suffer.
TLicense
What? 1st tier supplier?? Like it's a suprise to them as well? Why would you ever take out some kind of supply contract for a company that is quite clearly going down the pan? Don't tell me these companies put all of their eggs into the Rover basket?? Not very clever and not deserving my sympathy. It's not as if it means the public are going to buy less cars because Rover aren't around anymore. It just means that all these 1st tier suppliers are going to have to look elsewhere for business. (something it may have been wise to have done at least 5 years ago?) Pete
I'm pretty fed up of people saying the cars were no good. They were on par with others in the price range. Thanks to bad press and reviewers like Top Gear they've given the public the impression that they're no good....and cost the tax payers millions of pounds doing it. We got a brand new MG ZR for Vicki to drive in 8k Jan 04 - an absolute bargain! It looks good, performs well enough, grips well. It's been a fantastic car and I have nothing bad to say about it. My dad has a Rover 75. Again, for the price it's a nice car. Looks fairly elegant, isn't quick (but it for the old man!) and didn't cost the Earth. Ok depretation was a bit nasty, but it was bought for long term anyway. For me, the cars do what they set out to do. Personally I'd never buy another Vauxhall - now that was a crap unreliable car. I'm sad to see them go.
TLicense
Nobody here has said they were rubbish cars (well except my comment about that city car thing, which is!) The problem is more to do with the fact the cars are all facelift versions of cars that were designed for them by Honda back in the '80's. rover 25 = old school rover 200 rover 45 = old school rover 400/honda civic rover 75 = old school rover 600 The MG stuff is only tweeked versions of the above Can someone can show me a genuine example of where all the millions of development costs have gone?
