jhh1987
Hi i just recently purchased a MKIV and I want to keep it in good shape. My questions are: My exhaust doesn't smell great, what is the cause and how can i fix it? I want to change the the transmission fluid, it's a 4-speed auto (sadly), how much fluid do I need and what kind would be best? What kind of regular maintenance should I do on the car? And lastly, What kind of upgrade should i do first, considering its a 1993 MKIV TT 4-speed auto ? Thank in advance for your time.
legendswraith
Firstly what does the exhaust smell like "not great" isn't really that descriptive. Does it smell rich, sweet or acrid? All can be symptoms of different things. Auto fluid for the boxes is Toyota type IV If you just have got the car i'd check the last change of the timing belt and change the oil and plugs on spec, possibly the filter too depending on the look of it. I personally change the oil every 4k miles and plugs annually as i don't rack up alot of miles. Couldn't tell you about the more supra specific stuff as i have an aristo which only shares the engine and g/box First upgrade possibly decat, restrictor ring and boost controller. Is it a bare stock car? Lots of knowledgeable guys on here will be able to point you in the right direction
jhh1987
Thanks, the Supra is completely stock, as for the smell ill have to check on it again don't remember well how it smelled. As I I'm a complete newbie any extra info would be much appreciated.
bigbloodyturbo
What kind of upgrade should i do first, considering its a 1993 MKIV TT 4-speed auto ? Thank in advance for your time. First thing I'd do is tyres, brakes and an alignment. Personally if I haad to do it over again I'd get these done before any decats, EBC's or catbacks as its suprising how much of an effect they have when someone pulls out infront of you or cuts you up on a damp motorway. jhh1987
That's probably the most useful website on Supras. BTW I have a Japan Import, would it make a big difference.
stevie_b
BTW I have a Japan Import, would it make a big difference. No, not much difference to fluid capacities, if any.
jhh1987
i also forgot, about gas. Here in Canada we seems to have lower Octane rating. I was wondering what kind I should use, I know we have different gasoline available but I would just like to know what others think. Basically I'm thinking between Shell V-power and in Canada we have SuperClean with added Tactrol from Petro-Canada. Our Shell V-power is only 91 Octane and the SuperClean with Tactrol is 94 Octane and its 10 cents per liter more.
stevie_b
The Japanese use 100 RON I think, so the J-Spec cars are mapped to run on that. Twin turbo owners in the UK tend to use 97 or 98 Octane. Our standard fuel is 95 Octane, and JSpec TT owners tend not to use that if they can help it.
jhh1987
Im not sure, Japan octane rating was RON only while here was RON+MON/2, which meant 100 RON was about 95 RON+MON/2. And I don't think I have anything better than those two available to me. so its either 91 octane V-power or 94 octane superclean with tactrol. jhh1987
Is the UK octane rating in ROn or RON and MON?
legendswraith
UK rating is in RON, and i take back what i said about the boost controller etc, BBT's advice on alignment and tyres is probably a better idea considering i couldn't really put any power down till after my geometry was sorted
jhh1987
Seems like i'll have to settle with the 91 v-power, and also need to save up a lot to afford everything, recession .
